Dragons

The dragons, known as the Draushum in their own tongue, are a race of non-humanoid sapient creatures that find their origin before they were first documented by the elves in the Age of Creation. As the Dragons lack a script of their own, no written records are kept about their origin, yet it is likely that they were created in the early years of the Age of Creation by one of the gods. Dragons come in many different shapes and sizes, yet what they share is a great individualistic drive that leads them to be quite solitary creatures. As they tend to be large carnivores apex predators, they tend to deplete their food resources quickly if gathered together, to avoid rivalries they therefore do refrain from coming too close to one another, with the sole exception of often extremely rare mating rituals.

The Draconic Families

Dragons are a divided into a vast array of subspecies, all with their own and often outstanding characteristics. We make a distinction between 5 larger groups, called Draconic Families. They are:

True Dragons

True Dragons are the most well known family of dragons. They come in many different colours, yet their shape often remains similar to one another. True Dragons are recognizable by having four legs and a pair of wings, often with spikes protruding from its spine. These creatures tend to be intelligent, wise and can potentially reach an extremely high age due to their natural immortality. Most, but not all, have a breath attack which they use to devestating effect, especially when mature.

Drakes

These wingless Dragons are rare these days, having been a lot common in the Age of Creation than they are nowadays, though they may still be encountered in certain parts of the Underground. They presumably are little more than an offshoot of True Dragons that lost their wings by some unknown reason. There are few types of drakes known and even fewer categorised, but many share commonalities with their True Dragon ancestors.

Wyverns

Also known as False Dragons, these are a family of creatures that characterise themselves by being smaller, dumber, more animalistic as well as more numerous than their true dragon counterparts. They are recognizable by having only 2 limbs besides their wings just like birds, although some types of Wyverns have claws at the end of their wings. They are mortal creatures, with most subspecies of Wyverns living up to 500 years before passing of old age, although few ever reach that age.

Wyrms

Also called Great Worms, these are a family of dragons that are limbless and sometimes also wingless, making them appear as large worms. They come in several subspecies, although their exact definition is quite broad and potentially contains creatures that are draconic in origin at all, yet due to the lack of documentation, it is often hard to prove or disprove. However, one common factor of all wyrms is that, just like the True Dragons, they all are naturally immortal and can grow to potentially infinite size.

Arserin

Perhaps the stangest out of all the dragons, the Arserin, or Geesefolk are a feathered race of wyverns. These creatures, although looking much alike birds, are dragons through and through. Different than other dragons, the Arserin distinguish themselves by organizing themselves in complex cultures and states much like humanoid races.

Orphan Dragons

There are some types of dragon that, while undeniably draconic, do not fall under any of the previously named families. This miscellaneous category of dragons without any unifying link to any family are commonly called Orphan Dragons. Sometimes Dragons are considered an Orphan Dragon because a link to another family is hard to make due to its isolated living grounds, other times it's because of them being the result of some transformation.
