Yarn
Yarn is an ancient village on the banks of the River Armont. It has been strongly connected to the Adderley family in the last two or three hundred years.
Ianpip Urina Lilly Sakasys Verin, the gnomish warlock, lived with the Adderleys in the Manor throughout her time as tutor to the family.
Yarnites can sometimes be regarded with suspicion by other Westlo residents, presumably due to their tendency to welcome and trade with outsiders. This kind of suspicion is not common in the current generation, but there are jokes about Yarnites preferring complex solutions where simple ones suffice.
Demographics
While its inhabitants are mostly humanfolk, Yarn has traditionally been open-minded about mountain folk like gnomes, dwarves, goblins, orcs and even drow, and there are several families with admixture of folk in their past. Apart from the Adderleys, who might be the most mixed-up human noble family, most of the folk of Yarn are comfortably-off working folk and can be regarded as friendly to travellers.
Government
The Adderley family have been the de facto government of Yarn for almost three centuries. However, their presence is rarely required and their taxation is lenient. In effect, the Adderleys have a kind of benevolent dictatorship of Yarn, up to the present day.
Industry & Trade
Yarn's main economic purpose in the present time is in expediting river-borne trade from over the mountains, as the tariffs for landing goods at Yarn is much lower than at Duntown. Traders may find a significant advantage in landing their products at Yarn and transporting overland to Duntown from there, arriving at the city gates with an import certificate and thus paying no additional duty. As this is a tiny part of the Duntown economy, this is not seen as a loophole worth closing.
Tourism
The following is taken from the Trapadvisor Guide to Westlo.
There is little to offer the tourist in Yarn. However, the Adderley family do have a small museum that is locally known as the Backshee. It is in a state of disorder, and is mostly undocumented, meaning that it is not to be considered a major attraction. That said, the curious of spirit and those desirous more of questions than answers may find an afternoon's pleasure in exploring the exhibits.
The Keeper of the Backshee, an elf called Anna Mirfast makes an excellent afternoon tea at a reasonable price.
