House Von Midwald
House von Midwald are an influenctial Reikland family who rule the Duchy of Midwald in the Reikland.
The Duchess of Midwald is Gravina Elena von Midwald who also serves as High Lord Treasurer on the Reikland Council leaving her little time to spend on her estates and no time to manage them. Therefore her son and heir handles most of the day to day affairs of the Duchy.
Succession
Duchess Elena has named her only son Jurgen von Midwald as the heir to the Duchy of Midwald. However, it has been noted that the family as a whole has a succssion crisis on their hands.- Jurgen von Midwald and his wife Elisinda have yet to have any children and Elisinda is nearing the end of her child-bearing years so the window of opportunity to do so is rapidly closing.
- That boat has already sailed for Heinz von Midwald and his wife Freihilda. Freihilda is already too old to bear children and the couple are childless leaving nobody to inheret the Barony oF Havelfurt.
- At first glance the youngest brother Heidric von Midwald has been fortunate. He and his wife have a daughter called Selina. Unfortunately Heidric is consumed by doubts as to whether he is truly her father as Theodora has a reputation for sleeping with younger men but Theodora is now too old to bear anymore children even if they made the effort to try.
Gossip and Rumours
Inevitably as with any powerful family there are various rumours circulating about the estate concerning what goes on at the big house. Servants are notorious gossips. Likewise, the Imperial Court and the ballrooms of the Empire are awash with controversy and speculation about everyone and the Midwalds are certainly not excused from their attentions.- Probably the hottest gossip in the Imperial Court is centred around Baroness Kreiger, and whether the Baron is actually the father of her daughter Salina. This is usually expanded to include all the men of House von Midwald by making the observation that none of them seem able to sire children. Therefore, the likelihood that Baron Kreiger has managed to do so is highly unlikely. Hence, Salina must be the product of one of his wifes regular dalliances.
- The other major area of speculation is focussed on the unusually youthful appearance of Countess Sanktwiller. Undoubtly fuelled by jealousy amongst the ladies of the court this rumour draws heavily upon stories that circulate regularly in the village of Sanktwiller on her estate that the Countess preys upon the young men of the village luring them to some horrible fate at Sanktwiller Manor. Most of these rumours are probably groundless and in practice most of the Midwald women look good for their age, but as always there is no smoke without fire.
- There is similar controversity about the relationship between the Baron and Baroness Havelfurt. There is no doubt that the Baroness Friedhilda is a cruel embittered woman and there are plenty of housemaids and servants who will happily vouch for her cruelty and have the bruises to prove it. The real specultation is why the Baron puts up with it, as Baron Heinz is recognised as the most charming and generous individual one could hope to meet amongst the nobility and yet tolerates the his wifes abuses.
- Time is running out for the Count and Countess of Midfurt. Countess Elisindra is getting on in years and will soon be too old to bear children. The Count is desperate for an heir and all sorts of rumours are circulating about the lengths the couple are going to in order to beat the clock.
- There is also gossip amongst the Havelfurt's house maids that the Count may be planning to sow some wild oats if his wife doesn't deliver a baby soon. Perhaps planning to adopt any suitable bastard as his legitimate offspring. But if this is true then it seems that Count Jurgen is suffering from the same curse as the rest of the Midwald men as so far none of the house maids have become pregnant.
