SCHLECHT LADEN (E3) There’s an Altdorfer joke that ends with the punchline, ‘Death to the north, anarchy to the west, blood to the south, and gunpowder to the east. Why wouldn’t I live in Schlecht Laden?’ The joke isn’t very funny, especially to those who make their home here. But it’s a fair reflection of life in Schlecht Laden: the area is unpleasant, but on every side is a district that’s worse. There’s a palpable feeling of tension, like something bad is about to happen.
This a place of strange juxtapositions. Only in Schlecht Laden will one likely see a swaggering gang of Hooks pass a funeral procession heading towards Toteninsel, or a herd of pigs driven to slaughter ahead of a patrol of nervous soldiers from Pauper’s Keep. Most of the housing in Schlecht Laden consists of dilapidated rookeries, but the people who live here are more lethargic and less rebellious than East Enders elsewhere.
