Baron/Baroness
The lowest rank of Cynian nobility. Members of this class are often the direct stewards of parcels of land or settlements as assigned to them by whichever Count or Countess is their superior. The inheriting child is called baronet.
Responsibilities
As the manager of the settlements in a given area, persons of this rank are expected to manage relations with neighbouring baronies, ensure any threats to the settlements or fields are dealt with in a timely manner, provide warriors when called upon, and collect taxes from the local peasantry. Additionally, they are expected to ordain weddings when there is no appropriately ranked priest present, manage the logistics of local festivities, and ensure that all harvests are brought in in time and new seeds are planted or prepared for the next growing season.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
There are a number of reasons why a baron or baroness may have their title revoked. An extreme example would be high treason but other serious reasons could be willfully disobeying the orders of their governing Count or Countess, failing to provide militia when called to battle, being too heavy-handed towards their serfs, or raising taxes on their serfs unreasonably. If a baron's superior is made aware of any such or similar crimes, they have full power to strip them of their title and pass it on to whomever is deemed most fit.
