Changeling

Unusual mutants born to families in Wagakeya, Changelings have the strange ability to shapeshift into members of any other race with a similar body size. Theories abound about why this happens, but the leading theory among Kenku scholars is that Changelings are beings trapped between an infinite number of different potential universes. Some Changelings hide their abilities, while others use it to their advantage to blend into whichever society they choose.

Biological Traits

Changelings resemble the race of their parents, but tend to be a little on the slender side with white hair. They have the ability to shapeshift into the form of any other race of a similar size, although they cannot make use of that race's unique traits.

Genetics and Reproduction

Changelings are born to parents of other races. The reasons for this are not entirely clear. Just as with Aasimar and Tieflings, Changelings are born to other Changelings a little more frequently than they are to other races, but generally the children of a Changeling will be the same race as that Changeling's parents.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Changelings tend to need to eat a lot in order to sustain the energy demands of their shapeshifting ability.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Changelings are a people without an identity and with multiple identities at the same time. Some Changelings stick to their true forms, whereas others suppress them. Changelings typically have different names for their favorite forms, and use those forms as opportunities to embrace certain aspects of their personality. To the outside viewer, this may appear to be dissociative identity disorder.

Common Myths and Legends

The most common hypothesis for Changelings is that the spirit inside the Changeling has only a tenuous grasp on the universe, and may flit back and forth between other universes with timelines in which the spirit instead inhabited a member of a different race. Because there are an infinite number of possible timelines, there are technically a limitless number of forms that a Changeling can take, but they tend to really only adopt a small number of forms regularly.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Changelings tend to have at least slight amounts of attraction to members of all races and sexes. However, there is a roughly 50% chance that the child of a Changeling will be the same race as that Changeling's parents, even if the other parent is of a completely different race and the Changeling is impersonating that race.
Many people are not very familiar with Changelings, and so the sight of a Changeling transforming can often be a shock or a fright to them. Like Aasimar and Tieflings, Changelings are typically viewed as unnatural.
