Sea of Crystal

Geographic Overview

Nestled between the Unknown Tides and the Serpent Sea, the Sea of Crystal is a marginal sea far in the Boreal North. The sea is defined by its drifting ice sheets, turning the body of water into a glittering mirage in which it is difficult to identify bodies of land.   Where land is identifiable, it comes in two varieties. Most distinctive, and largely in the north of the sea, are imposing pillars of gray rock, forming icey spires jutting high into the sky. This frozen north is largely unexplored by the Anharan whalers who have been brave enough to approach the area. However, it is home to many small but hardy groups of northern tribesmen.   In the southern Sea of Crystal, where currents from the Hewn Sea create a more hospitable environment, there are a number of forested islands. Here are found the area's more permanent settlements, from ancient villages nestled against sacred mountains to Anharan whaling stations clinging to warmer waters.   These dense, frozen forests are dotted with glacial lakes, creating an area of great natural beauty but hazardous environmental conditions.

Fauna

Much of the Sea of Crystal's notability comes from the abundance of Toothed Whale in its waters. This variety of whale is much sought-after by The Promenade's whaling industry, though few have ever been caught. Their most valued product is not meat or oil however, but rather their teeth. These can be found along the icebergs and rocky spires which Anharan and tribal myth say are used by the whales to sharpen their teeth.
