Protector Spirits
The Pu Yi believe that doorways, arches, and other entrances serve both a practical purpose, as well as a spiritual one. They practice that any spirit - both tangible (ghosts) and immaterial (strong feelings) - upon reaching any entrance which has a guardian, has to ask for permission to enter. It is the guard's responsibility to approve only good spirits and to prevent any bad or evil ones.
Because of this, every doorway in Ka Hei is framed by two small statues on its side. These statues are typically very small, and usually represent Pu Yi or local animals. These statues serve as guardians of the door, and are the ones spirits are to ask for permission to enter.
