The Grid System
City Walls
Estalia is surrounded by a series of four walls, referred to as the "First" through "Fourth Wall", incrementally from the inside to outside. Gates are extremely limited, with the two main streets, Estalian Way (N-S), and Surveyor's Street (W-E) typically providing the only break. The walls are protected by regularly spaced towers, which are capped with Estalia's iconic silver roofs.City Quarters
Because of the series of walls, Estalia is naturally divided into four areas. Although citizens can travel across all areas, which area they live in is dependent on the Estalian Caste System. In general, the types of people which live in each area (from inside to outside) is as follows:- The innermost area consists of The Sedile, and typically has no permanent residents other than the Auctor.
- The second most area between the First and Second Walls is home to high ranking members of the government (such as Senators and members of The Silver Legion, as well as many public buildings which weren't constructed in the Sedile.
- The third area between the Second and Third Walls is the largest, and consists of trained tradespeople and their families, as well as the majority of the commercial spaces.
- The fourth area between the Third and Fourth Walls consists of most of the city's industry, as well as recently nationalized citizens and foreigners.
The Grid System
The entirety of Estalia is build on a grid of roads centred on the intersection of Estalian Way and Surveyor's Street in The Sedile. Each block is exactly 100 m wide, and each street is simply given a number. The grid spreads in all four directions for 112 streets, with exception to the south, which due to the curve of the coast, extends to 126.Navigation by Street Address
For those accustomed to the grid system, the address of a location can serve as a map for where to find it. Estalian addresses follow some simple rules:- Streets are oriented either N-S or W-E.
- Each street has a prefix stating which direction away from the centre it is (i.e. a street with a "South" or "S" prefix is W-E oriented and to the south of the centre).
- Street numbers go up as you move away from the centre.
- Street numbers increase by 100 each block.
- Even numbers are on the North/West sides of the street.
Example: "N 6th W1203."Heavily Inspired by Chicago's Grid System: https://chicagostudies.uchicago.edu/grid
- We know this address is 6 blocks north of Surveyor's Street (on N 6th Street, which travels E-W)
- The address is in the north-west quarter of the city
- The address is between W 12th and W 13, although it is likely closer to W 12th.
- The address is on the south side of the street, as it ends in an odd number.
