Bastian van Waerten

Bastian van Waerten was impossible to go unnoticed. A large strong knight from Luksdorv who also enjoyed life in every moment. His boisterous demenor went hand in hand with his battle prowess.

While most of his life he enjoyed the friendly competitions among knights of the Realm as well as the occasional skirmsh with bandits, gnolls or other sourcess of unrest, he was looking for a real war to satisfy his lust for a proper battle. When Hundswacht nobles once more urged for an army to be raised in 436 Y.o.U. to fight the goblinoids, he readily accepted. While his expection wasn't to get a proper challenge, as goblins were hardly a match for knights, he at least hoped for some months of fighting to get the blood boiling.

Bastian was a tough customer who was known to give as good as he could take. He didn't care too much about lofty chevalier ideals, as he was in for the challenge of battle itself. What he lacked in discipline he made up in bravery and he expected the same from his men. He also didn't mind what they did when they were not on the battlefield, but he expected them to be ready once the armies lined up ('You can party all night long, as long as you are ready to kill and be killed the next day').

While some might think that he lacked responsability, there is no doubt that he would never leave his men behind or ask them to do something that he won't be doing himself. He saw himself as the first shield protecting his soldiers and country.

During the campaign against the Goblinoid Invasion of 436 YoU he lead the reinforcing army as second in command after Xavier van Axxen and was usually in charge of the knights of the realm.   During the battled of 'Crushed Hope' he was in command of the left flank of the army. He himself charged the knights into the line of advancing orgers tearing three of them down before even one of them manage to try to strike back. Despite his valiant effort the battle was a lost cause, but he and his knights managed to bind the enemy flank for long enough to buy time for others to retreat.   Contrary to the believes of those who fled all the way back Pjotrsdorv Bastian wasn't killed in the battle. Instead he rallied surviors of the battle that were cut off leading them to Laangstep. They managed to breach the siege lines and join the defense of the town.   For the next year he gained a fierce reputation among the Far Landers fighting there. Often being the first one in line to stop an incursion. This reputation gain him the support of a warband that joined in 437 YoU the defense of the city. They are a motley group of fighters that had previously cleared the hinterlands of Pjotrsdorv of goblins and then requested from Lord Kjonstantin to be shipped to Laangen to fight there.   When Bran Sparkhammer came to Laangen and took the western lighthouse, Bastian van Waertens teamed up with the warband to secure the eastern. After a long battle lasting more than a night and a day, bearing the burnt of the hobgoblin conter offensive they managed to claim victory against all odds. With both lighthouses secured the hobgoblins no longer were able to threaten the ships coming into the harbour.   Yet the victory was short lived as a fleet of Reaver ships established a blockade while the Realm's ships came to harbour to evacute the remaining civilians. The warband around Bastian offered a solution for the situation at hand. Instead of fighting through the blockade, losing civilians to the sea pirates or pointlessly trying to keep them alive with diminish supplies and constant hobgoblin attacks, their death should be accepted as a fact and instead used to summon demons of Qharnate to destroy the besieging army. Bastian joined their arguement as through out the night fighting at the lighthouse he had seen what those demons lured by bloodspill could do. He himself embraced the power a voice had offered him for every kill he dedicated to Qharnate.   Convinced by Bran to not give up and instead try to save as many lives as possible Krahl van Morinth ordered a retreat from the city. Civilians and as many soldiers as possible should try to make it to the ships and escape. While this decisions were being made hobgoblins breached once again the walls pushing deep into the city as guards started to prepare their leave. Disgusted by the lack of will to fight the warband that know openly admitted to be a cult of Qharnate started indiscrimately murder everyone in the streets, spilling blood in the name of the demon prince. Bastian himself taking up a leading role in the mayham they caused.   Beating back an assault Bran was among the last persons to see Bastian van Waertens surrounded by cultists and demons slaughtering his way through the ruins of the falling town.
