The Dark Ones
Names
The Dark Ones. The Deep Ones.
Destroyed Drunor/The Halls Of Drunor. This ancient hall was taken from them by ‘the dark ones’ a race of beings the dwarves refused to remember. Since fleeing the deeper earth they’ve fought a continually losing battle against the drow for control of the Underdark, the end of this conflict forcing them to settle a majority of their population on the surface, something they once considered sacrilegious.
Broods
Though ultimately aligned to one another, the dark ones seem to have several distinct camps within their species. They occasionally war or skirmish with one another, seemingly in a battle for supremacy, but it is not known for certain why these conflicts occur. This infighting seems to have become more common in the last few centuries as the number of broods have risen from the initial two, to five total broods.
The Mind Brood
Devoted to the domination of the mind, this brood unleashes powerful blasts of psionic energy while utilizing enslaved chattle as the vanguard of their armies. Their numbers are small, but they are easily the most intelligent of the broods. Their signature unit is the Survorad, a slimy abomination that are able to devour the intellect of others, stealing their memories and skills. One of the initial two broods, the mind broods are the most often to lead a darktide, that was until the coming of the crown brood.
The Body Brood
Devoted to the domination of the body, this brood unleashes hordes of monsterously powerful creatures capable of physically adapting to their foe should their initial strength not be enough. Their numbers are great, and their armies vast, but they are the least intelligent of the broods. The signature unit of their brood is the Pariah, a beast capable of grappling a target, and forcefully absorbing them, gaining their strengths, and muscle memory. One of the two initial broods, the body brood are less likely to lead a darktide, though the only time they did they saw more gains then during any other. This event is sometimes called the Beast Tide.
The Spirit Brood
After the expansions of the Beast Tide two new broods appeared, one of which was the spirit brood. Though initially this brood was thought to only be a plague unconected to the dark ones as a whole, this would change when a dark elven city was assaulted by strangely geometric army of fungul abominations. Though initially they found success in repelling the strange creatures, they soon found that an infection had broken out amongst the survivors. Within days every fighter that came in contact with the Zigzags as they were called succumbed to the illness and joined the city's attackers. Overwhelmed the city was wiped out, and its populace made to join the brood. Most underdark travellers know to avoid caverns filled with oddly geometric mushrooms or other plantlife. Their signature unit is the Myconodrax, an enormous pulsing mass of perfectly square mushrooms that float through the air, occasionally striking out with strange suckers they use to abduct individuals, infest them and depost them where they are needed.
The Shadow Brood
After the expansion of the Beast Tide two new broods appeared, one of which was the shadow brood. Though initially this brood was thought to only be a sort of magical infection of some kind this would change when a dwarven city would find itself suddenly afflicted by an odd plague. After an odd pulse of magic briefly bathed the city in magical darkness individuals began to complain of their shadow acting strangely, as if it were watching them or it was resistant to light. These individuals would soon become afflicted by a condition called the consumption, wherein after a brief bout of extreme fever would lead to an abnormally high but seemingly no longer irritating high internal temperature. They will also become incredibly hunger, and will start to become taller, with a more slender physique with each limb growing at different speeds. In time their eyes become sunken, their hands turn to claws, all hair falls out, and all color is lost from skin to eyes. During this process they seek to self isolate, ending in an prolonged bout of tremors. At the end of this process the individual becomes incredibly hostile to all non infected entities and an enormous, twisted abomination of the person they used to be. The dwarven city that first was targeted was almost completely wiped out, with only several minor families breaking containment and fleeing. Their signature unit is the marble eyed Grey. These small creatures sport enormous pitch black eyes, and seem to be the fore runners of the shadow brood, inspecting and if the stories are true, infecting others with the Consumption should they make the mistake of making eye contact with these creatures.
The Crown Brood
The newest brood to emerge, some doubt that it can even truly be called a brood considering their incredibly limited number. What is known is that these individuals seem to be purely mechanical in nature, though they move in such a way that they appear at first glance, to be organic. Produced by great factories made up of tens of millions of gears, pistons and other seemingly random mechanical parts moving without purpose, they expand constantly, and are nearly impenetrable, regrowing any damage they may sustain through unknown means. Though there are small numbers of smaller, foot soldier variants, the primary output seem to be their signature unit, the Uncrowned Princes. Enormous mechanical creatures incredibly resistant to damage be it physical, magical, or psionic. The Uncrowned will instinctually begin rallying the other broods, using some unknown means of diplomacy or cooresion. After a large enough force is established, they will turn their forces towards the nearest target, leading small Dark Tides called Rogue Tides. Should they be successful, they will adapt and alter themselves before turning back, and rallying more of the broods to their banner. In time this process leads to either death, or another Dark Tide.
All broods produce Forgotten Beasts, though to different degrees and varieties.
