Gnomes of Amarthaur
There are three broad species of Gnome that live in the vicinity of Yore – the Nysteri of the Bor Nyster, the Margryn of The Old Margreve Forest, and the Svirfneblin of the Neblinhala. All three have grown markedly divergent over millennia of independent evolution.
The Deep Gnomes of the Galentaur forest make their homes underground, are stocky and ashen blue of complexion, and are mistrustful of magic, preferring to tinker and mine, and to deal in gems and precious metals with the nearby Elves of Qualimor. They are a doughty people, skilled at fending off the Duergar and other, stranger threats of the Underdark, but are also indecisive, fickle and (perhaps understandably) nervous of outsiders.
The Margreve Gnomes suspend their homes amongst the ancient canopy of the vast, fey forest. Their largest settlement is Treeholme, also known as the Hidden City, for it is cloaked from view by a magical curtain. The Margryn are steeped in magical illusion, abjuration and trickery, and have tamed some of the local creatures, even fierce honey badgers, to use as steeds. They are a shy race, but kindly and welcoming to those who come in peace.
The Nysteri are the least well known, smaller in stature than their already diminutive cousins, wild-haired with unusual, sometimes vibrant, skin tones, and skilled with transmutation and enchantment magicks. They are known to be capricious, unpredictable and sometimes vindictive, and to have a deep bond with other fey such as nymphs and dryads. Whilst some live amongst the Avarwaith and the Wild Elves of Kagonost, most are free spirits of the wilderness, who treat ‘civilising’ forces such as humans with distrust, disdain or outright hostility. Some of those who have spent long years in Kagonost have noticeably lost colour and vitality, as though their spirit is sapped by being confined, even with such sylvan souls as The Kagonesti.
