Mythology & Lore
The Main Gods
Ixchel, Lady of Bones
Lady Ixchel is the first god. She saw herself, a feathered serpent, reflected in the curve of space, and danced with joy. When she danced, she split into two -- quetzal and snake. The second was Itzamna, her mate, and with him she had many children.
Itzamna, Lord of Maize
Itzamna is a quetzal god of agriculture and maize, the main staple of the Ixile'a. He is the father of the gods, and with his mate Ixchel he rules over the pantheon.
Tilla Ixazaluoh, Lady of Salt
Tilla Ixazaluoh is the lady of salt and fisheries.
Mam Maximon, Lord of Tobacco
Mam Maximon taught the Ixile'a the secrets of planting tobacco and distilling whiskey. Whiskey and tobacco are given to him as offerings.
Tilla Colel Cab, Lady of Fire
Tilla Colel Cab helped fight against Zipacna, the god of dirt, when he rose up against Ixchel and the Nine. She commands swarms of bees to sting the unworthy in the underworld, and as such she's also the goddess of honey.
Mam Kan, Lord of Speech
Mam Kan's beloved are wolves, and he gave them the gift of speech when they ran to the north so they would not forget him.
Chantico, Lady of the Hearth
Chantico is Hunhau's older sister, and the only one not afraid of him or giving him a talking-to. She tried to help the dead when he abandoned his duties, but she was unable to shepherd the spirits to the afterlife.
Hunhau, Lord of Death
Hunhau takes the spirits of the dead to the afterlife. Without him, they wander the land, sad and lost. He is a cold god, only warming up around his love Ixtab.
Ixtab, Lady of Jade
Ixtab is the most beloved of both Ixchel and the Ixile'a. She is the compassionate goddess of suicide and the one who gave the power of the Jade Star to the people. She is partnered to her love Hunhau, the god of death, but her true affection lies with the mortals who love her.
