Triton

The tritons dwell along Zholmyr's winding coastline. Curious, thoughtful, and analytical, tritons are natural explorers and probers of the physical world. They were the first of the mortal races to settle in Zholmyr after the exodus of the Steward Racs, and they have developed exquisite underwater empires and networks of civilization. But today, they are a race in decline. As the other races grew, evolved, and spread themselves across the land, the tritons closed themselves off, instead choosing to focus on their underwater endeavors and share none of their knowledge of the world.   The tritons are aquatic humanoids from the ocean depths of Zholmyr. Curious, thoughtful, and analytical, trirons are natural explorers and probers of the world. Long-established champions of the deep ocean floor, in recent years the noble tritons have become increasingly active in the world above.

A Submarine Superpower

Tritons possess some of the oldest recorded histories, and have spent eons developing vast troves of knowledge and forging endless ties to the Quintessence. Their endless crusade for insight into the world led them to travel far across the oceans of Zholmyr. City-states rose and fell, alliances were made and broken, all while the landfolk still existed in a state of rough tribalism.   Today, tritons are experiencing a rapid decline in their civilization as their cities fail to compare to the new megacities of the landfolk. As the other races grew, evolved, and spread themselves across the land, the tritons closed themselves off, instead choosing to focus on their underwater endeavors and share none of their knowledge of the world--and they are feeling the aftershocks of their isolation. To keep tabs on the rapidly growing landfolk, tritons have raided and conquered many coastal towns and established settlements that serve as both outpost and embassy.

Proud Heritage

As a result of their isolation and limited understanding of the surface world, tritons can come across as haughty and arrogant. They see themselves as the original architects of civilization, and they expect other races to pay them deep respect, if not complete deference.   Tritons also have a tendency to emerge from their isolation under the assumption that other folk will welcome them as respected superiors and mentors. Again, distance drives much of this attitude. The triton history of isolation leaves them ignorant of the kingdoms, wars, and other struggles of the surface world.   The triton peoples have since become aware of how little they know of the surface world and its role in the quintessence. They have launched a new crusade to gain all knowledge of this alien world, just as they conquered their understanding of the ocean depths.
