Episode 5: Revelations

General Summary

The party found themselves standing out in front of the Temple of Valkur at approximately 2:00 PM and started discussing what their next move would be. Kasek suggested visiting with Edraele Trisyra at House Caldel, however Celindriel brought up the issue of whether or not it is known if Drossa Diggle cleans the Inn rooms during the day. Regardless of whether they keep their rooms locked, chances are Drossa Diggle has a key to access the rooms. Kasek asks if they should move the ‘luggage’ (referring to Rilanor's body), and Celindriel mentioned that it might not be necessary at this exact moment, but they are running out of time. Kasek floated the idea of having Levkaria watch the body, but decided that would be rather cruel to ask her to do that, and Ceona objected to the idea as well. Since it is unknown whether it would even be an issue, the party decides to head back to the Grinning Kobold Inn and check in to see if Drossa has returned from being sold figs at the Anellas.

They arrive at the Inn and noticed that Drossa hadn’t returned yet. Kasek decides to leave a note on his door that simply says “Do Not Disturb!”, and then asks if Levkaria would be willing to remain in the common area of the Inn and intercept Drossa is she makes an attempt to go upstairs and clean the rooms. Levkaria shyly agrees after getting reassurance from Ceona and that the party will return soon. Kasek hands her his dagger and sheath, and she arms herself making sure to keep the weapon hidden under her clothing.

The party then makes their way to House Caldel and arrive at the front door, knocking to be let in. The door is answered by a Hirane Town Guard (one the party has not seen before). They state their wish to see Edraele Trisyra and the guard lets them enter. Once inside, the party notices a total of six Hirane Town Guards (all unfamiliar) standing in various positions throughout the main public waiting area of the Manor. They are asked to wait while Edraele is notified of their presence and they take a seat. While waiting, they notice the house is decorated rather ostentatiously, especially for a small town such as Hirane. Celindriel attempts to glean whether most of the decorations are new, as if the Lord has just recently come into money, but is unable to definitively tell.

The guards let Edraele know that the party is seeking an audience. She meets them and welcomes them into her private office attached to the main public waiting area. As the party takes a seat in front of her large oak desk, Celindriel walks by bookshelves occupying the room and notices many of the books are reference material in nature -- lore, history, major historical events, etc. Ceona begins the conversation by mentioning they are friends with Berny Page, to which Edraele blushes at the mention of his name and refers to him as “Her Captain”. Ceona continues by mentioning Berny had informed them about the problems the town was currently facing. Ceona also informed Edraele that she herself is an ambassador from Verchei and she was looking to develop relations with nations that have the same values as theirs. Edraele was impressed, and welcomed her and the rest of the party to the Kingdom of Laskea, however being a small fishing hamlet they have very little to offer to a diplomat from another nation. She suggested they inquire at the Temple of Torm's Coming in Sestatrea in order to establish proper relations between their two nations.

Ceona thanked her, and then proceeded to tell her that after speaking with Berny Page regarding the problems within town, they had volunteered to help. Ceona then asked if there was any information Edraele might be able to share with them to help with the troubles within town. Edraele admitted that while the town has its fair share of problems, she’s sure that Lord Andel Caldel is doing everything within his power to help. Both Celindriel and Ceona attempt to gauge her response, and both determined this to be a rather diplomatic and careful answer to their question. Ceona leaned in and leveled with Edraele stating that Berny had told them everything that he knows about the troubles that Hirane is having, however if they don’t know all the details of what is happening, they are unable to help him -- and Berny is in desperate need of help. She told Edraele that she is almost certain there are individuals within the town that would be more than happy to end Berny’s life if given the chance. Feadog adds that he’s certain that isn’t what Edraele wants, and Celindriel followed up stating that although Lord Caldel is doing his best, he’s only “one man”. Edraele agreed with all of their assessments, and asked for more specifics on what it is the party is interested in knowing. She stated that she will certainly answer all questions honestly and to the best of her ability “while in this current environment”.

Kasek started off by saying “There’s obvious corruption at the docks….”, to which Edraele immediately put her hands up without saying a word, giving Kasek the impression of not saying more on the subject. Kasek stopped his line of questioning, confused, and noticed Edraele had begun playing with a signet ring she wears on her right ring finger. She began mouthing words, but not making a sound. Kasek heard Edraele’s voice resonate within his mind, telling him “Not here, we can talk later, but not here.” Kasek responded by sending his thoughts telepathically to her asking “Where?” She responded “Come to my house later tonight, and we can talk privately. Berny can show you where.”

Kasek immediately began telling Edraele that he believes the prices at the Grinning Kobold are an outrage and that Edraele should be looking into that. Feadog wondered what was going on, and looked around confused. Picking up on Kasek’s change in conversation, Ceona joined in commenting on how disappointed she was that the Tasty Gull eatery didn’t have actual seagulls as a dish. Edraele, being somewhat naive, began to take their comments seriously, however Celindriel reassured her they were merely playing along as to not arouse suspicions in case the walls had ears. Feadog then joined in, picking up on the misdirection, and began reinforcing the concerns Ceona had regarding the Tasty Gull. Edraele apologized that their first experience with the Kingdom of Laskea was so disappointing and she stated she would certainly look into the matter. Kasek rose and stated “I think our business is done here”, and began to head back to the door. Edraele walked them to the door and let them back out into the public waiting area at the front of the house.

As they filed through the door, the party noticed an older gentleman had exited a door nearby and began walking in their direction. He called out for Edraele, who responded to his commands and indicated to the party that the man was Lord Andel Caldel. He approached the group to speak with Edraele, and Feadog immediately introduced himself as the Pan Flute Entertainer Extraordinaire, known throughout all of Abios. Lord Caldel made a minimal attempt at decency while talking with Feadog, but then decided to inquire about the other members of the party. The party introduced themselves and he responded politely to each of their introductions. He welcomed everyone to Hirane, and then proceeded to remind them that they are merely guests within the town, and suggests they do their best to not cause any trouble. He then proceeds to tell them to seek out Berny Page, Captain of the Town Guard if they are seeking to perform any service for the town. He then offers to answer any questions the party may have for him, but the party thinks better of it, and merely states that they have concluded their business with Edraele and are just leaving. Feadog, however, jumps in and pulls a dried fig from his sack and offers it to Lord Caldel. Caldel refuses to partake in the fruit, mentioning that figs “don’t agree with him”, but tells Edraele to look into the matter of whether the kitchen staff may have any use for some. Celindriel thanks Edraele for receiving them and the party begins to make their way out of the building. While at the front door, the party turns to look one last time into the room, and notices Lord Caldel leading Edraele back into her office while talking to her. As he closes the door to her office with one hand, his other hand is observed sliding down the small of her back. Once outside, both Celindriel and Ceona fume with incredulity over the Lord’s wandering hand.

With the time now being roughly 2:45 PM, the party begins debating on what to do next, and specifically what they could potentially do with the body of Rilanor now residing within Kasek’s room at the Grinning Kobold Inn. While talking, both Kasek and Ceona notice Sylrith Madz standing at the front door of Rilanor's House banging on the front door and looking agitated that he isn’t being answered. After a few moments, Sylrith gives up and begins walking towards the southern end of the Town Square. The party decides to follow him at a distance with Ceona stopping occasionally at some of the market stands within the Town Square trying to look inconspicuous. As Sylrith rounds the corner near the Iron Lady Smithy and the Tasty Gull, he glances behind him and notices the party following him. The party continues to follow with Ceona lagging behind, and as they round the corner they see Sylrith duck into a door at the back side of the Warehouse.

The party begins to devise a plan for gaining access to the warehouse by attempting to sell figs as an excuse to speak with whoever is inside. The party fans out and reconnoiters the building, which is approximately 100’ x 100’ at its largest dimension. The southern end of the warehouse has two large barn-style doors that are closed, while the northern end of the building has one normal-sized door. Ceona and Feadog plan on knocking on the barn-style doors, while Kasek waits at the north-eastern edge of the building as a signalman to Celindriel who is waiting near the single entrance on the northern edge of the building. The plan is for Celindriel and Kasek to sneak into the single entrance while whoever is in the Warehouse is distracted by Ceona and Feadog.

Ceona takes her warhammer and knocks on the large barns doors. She notices the doors don’t seem to sound as one would expect for thin wooden doors, nor do they flex and bow like one would expect. The doors feel to be quite thick. A voice resonates from behind the barn doors asking “What do you want?!” Feadog attempts to interest the voice in figs, and the voice immediately tells them to “Go away!”. Feadog makes another attempt, and is met with the same result. Ceona begins knocking again, and the voice tells them to “Piss off!”. Ceona continues to knock, but nothing more is heard from within. Ceona and Feadog both shrug at Kasek and Celindriel, who are standing-by waiting for some indication to make a move on the door. Ceona and Feadog then head around to the northern edge of the building and check the single-entrance door and find it to be locked. Ceona then begins pounding on the door with her warhammer, much to Kasek’s chagrin. This door also sounds quite thick and doesn’t give as one would expect. Kasek then begins to ask “What’s our end-game here? This will come to blows.” The group ponders on their predicament, and decide to investigate later. Kasek at this point begins to think that skipping town might be their best option. The party agrees that the next best option is to regroup at the Grinning Kobold Inn.

As the party makes their way into the front lobby of the Inn, they see Levkaria dozing in the common area, but also see five large urns filled to the brim with dried figs on the front counter. Celindriel calls out for Drossa, who emerges from her private quarters on the ground floor of the Inn. She exchanges pleasantries with the party, and then laments about having just unexpectedly acquired a large quantity of figs. The party sympathizes, and Drossa appreciates the sentiment, but scolds them for talking her into inquiring with the Anellas. After listening to Drossa prattle on about the figs, Kasek then asks her when she cleans the rooms. Drossa states she usually only cleans the rooms when visitors have checked-out, or if the customer requests it. This satisfies Kasek, and he makes his way upstairs. Ceona gently rouses Levkaria from her dozing and leads her back upstairs to her room, leaving Celindriel and Feadog downstairs with Drossa.

Drossa begins inquiring as to whether they have all been traveling together for some time. Celindriel admits they haven’t been together for that long, and Drossa presses them for more information, eager to hear about tales from other lands. Feadog tells Drossa that he’s been the world over, playing to Kings, Queens, and the like. Celindriel mentions that she’s only been to Telethas and here (Hirane). Drossa is incredulous about Celindriel having visited Telethas. She leans over to Feadog and whispers “Nobody goes to Telethas...and lives to tell about it.” They talk more about figs, the mysterious strangers, and about their plans for the evening. Feadog and Celindriel engage in pleasant conversation and eventually pull themselves away from the chatty innkeeper and head upstairs to rejoin the others.

The party convenes in the first room at the top of the stairs (Celindriel and Ceona’s room). The party begins discussing their options for disposing the body. Kasek tells them their only option is to wait until night falls, but also mentions he is concerned about something more than just dealing with Rilanor. Kasek mentions to everyone that Sylrith and Tela may have a couple of Hirane Town Guards in their pocket, and they’ve been observed enough that if anyone is suspected of having done something with Rilanor, it would be them. Kasek is fearful of an imminent attack by the criminals, and Feadog asks what are they to do? The party takes a collective long breath, weighing their options. Feadog broaches the subject of potentially skipping town as had been mentioned previously by Kasek, but wonders if there is the potential of learning more from meeting with Berny and Edraele later that evening. Celindriel acknowledges there is a possibility of learning more that could help them in overcoming their current predicament. Feadog then wonders, if they do leave, would the criminals likely pursue. Kasek tells him that is likely to be the case, and Feadog acknowledges he doesn’t want to be constantly looking over his shoulder. The rest of the party politely suggests that he should do exactly that given his demeanor and luck in dealing with people. Kasek admits feeling nervous about the next few hours given the chain of events that have transpired. Feadog suggests they wait it out on the Anellas, to which Celindriel suggests it would be a bad idea to box themselves in on a ship. Kasek agrees, stating at least within town they have options for escaping if things go poorly. Ceona speaks up and mentions that she’s obligated to help and establish relations with other nations and governments in an attempt to help her own people, and helping the people of Hirane could certainly help in that endeavor.

Feadog then brings up what they had all witnessed at House Caldel, with what appeared to be Lord Caldel getting fresh with Edraele Trisyra. They all began speculating on what bearing that has on the events within town given the fact that Lord Caldel had given Berny Page instruction to not have any romantic relations with Edraele. Celindriel admits there may be some ulterior motives for him making that request.

Feadog mentions that perhaps they could steal a ship, but the rest of the party members admit having no knowledge of how to Captain a ship. They then consider purchasing or stealing horses in the event they need to skip town in a hurry. Ceona mentions that, for what it’s worth, the last time she tried to talk her way out of a situation, she ended up as a prisoner, then killed everyone and had to escape through sewers. The rest of the party all looked at her wide-eyed and surprised, and Feadog asked incredulously “You’ve killed before today?” The rest of the party all took turns reminding Feadog that it’s a dangerous world, and the world is not quite as innocent as it seems. Ceona guides the attention off of her and back to developing an escape plan. The party then considers stealing horses given that if they’re skipping town, should they really need to pay for the horses? Ceona adamantly refuses to do so, as their actions could have unforeseen consequences, and she doesn’t want to contribute to someone else potentially being unable to provide for themselves if they abscond with their only means to do so. The party makes the decision to inquire at the Stables within town for the possibility of renting or purchasing horses.

Kasek then broaches the subject of whether they will need four or five horses, eyeing Levkaria sitting in the corner. Ceona says she intends on heading north until reaching the frozen sea, and then head back east to her homeland of Verchei. If need be she will take Levkaria back to Verchei with her and hopefully reunite Levkaria with friends or family. Levkaria, listening to the discussing, seems saddened and the party gets the impression that they’ve led Levkaria to feel as if she’s unwanted. Ceona tries to reassure her that she’s welcome within the group, and that they will protect and provide for her while she remains within their company. She smiled warily at the gesture, but still remained somewhat disheartened.

The party agrees to inquire about horses, and Ceona immediately heads downstairs and asks Drossa about the price of horses. Drossa begins rambling on and on about how the pricing of horses could depend on the farmer and owner of the horse, the season, and so on and on. Not wanting to waste time, Ceona leaves the chatty Halfling and the Grinning Kobold Inn with Feadog in tow as the others remained behind. They headed towards the northern stables and inquired about how many horses are currently available with a stable boy working the stalls. The boy informed them that only one horse was currently available, but he would need to talk with the owner to see how much he would be willing to take to part with the horse. When asked how much the horses go for on average, the stable boy replied that they typically go for anywhere between 35 gp to 40 gp. Unsatisfied with that answer, Ceona and Feadog proceeded to the eastern stables located at the edge of town.

They found another stable boy working the eastern stables and immediately inquired as to whether there were any horses for sale. The boy indicated that there were currently no horses for sale as the eastern stables are normally used to house visitor’s mounts, to which there were currently none. Feadog asked how the stables are able to make a livelihood if there is no business, and the stable boy informed them that the stables are owned and operated by the town of Hirane, specifically Lord Caldel, and are provided as a service to the town. Feadog began pressing the boy on where they might be able to find four or more horses, and the boy indicated that he would be hard pressed to find that many horses in one location. Feadog then asked if the horses might like figs, and the stable boy admitted he doesn’t know much about the horse’s diet when it comes to eating figs and was unsure on how to answer. Feadog then offered the boy a fig, and ends up persuading the boy to run home and get his father to walk down to the Anellas to purchase more. Satisfied in potentially earning another 5 gp from Enwen Adrel, Ceona and Feadog return to the Grinning Kobold Inn.

They return to find Kasek down in the lobby watching the front door nervously. Ceona and Feadog head back upstairs, and Ceona curls up in bed and takes a nap with Levkaria following suit by dozing in her bed. Feadog lounges in Ceona and Celindriel’s room and takes a short rest, while Celindriel reads. Meanwhile, Kasek heads back to his own room and spends the time looking at the bloody wheelbarrow in his room. He spends the time fretting about what might happen later that evening, and keeping an eye out the window for anyone suspicious that might approach the Inn.

Time passes, and Celindriel rouses the group as the light dims outside indicating that the time drew close to 6:25 PM. Kasek makes his way from his room back to Ceona and Celindriel’s room and lets himself in. Kasek begins asking how they are to proceed for the evening. He suggests that he stand away from the group and keep watch, and tells the rest that it’ll be up to them to inform Berny Page that Rilanor is dead. Feadog mentions that he could potentially be the one to break the news gently to him, but mentions that perhaps Ceona should since they are both holy warriors of sorts and maybe there is a common bond there that could be their saving grace with broaching the subject. Ceona merely tells them that they should stick to telling the truth as much as they can without potentially implicating themselves. Kasek also suggests that, if they can help it, to not let Berny have access or be allowed to examine the body given the fact it has a missing finger, a sliced achilles, and multiple chest puncture wounds. They finalize the details of meeting Berny, and make their way out of the Grinning Kobold Inn and head towards the What Ales You Tavern with Kasek keeping a generous distance behind the rest of the group.

As Celindriel, Ceona, and Feadog enter, they notice Rosla Grurim, and Tela Cliffoak face-down in his usual spot in the corner table. They also see a dwarf female they haven’t met before, along with a rather overweight half-elf male. Berny Page and Edraele Trisyra are not in attendance, but Symes Vatsk is manning the taps behind the bar with his daughter Relyra making her rounds serving drinks. Unlike the previous evening, the musicians are already setting up as more patrons make their way into the pub, and the three party members find an empty table away from Tela Cliffoak with Ceona taking a seat at a table next to Celindriel and Feadog’s table.

Relyra approaches and takes Celindriel, Ceona, and Feadog’s order and moves along. At this time, Kasek walks in and takes a table close to the entrance in order to keep an eye on things. Relyra eventually returns and hands the three their drinks, collects their money and moves along. As a few more patrons enter, Kasek notices the two Hirane Town Guardsmen they had encountered several times before named Gilson and Liam enter. They look around the tavern and see Tela dozing at his corner table. Gilson nudges Liam and indicates in his direction, and then tells Liam ‘something’. Liam nods and stands idly by as Gilson makes his way over to Tela, eventually taking a seat next to him. Gilson makes a show of nudging Tela, giving the impression that he’s checking on him, but Kasek notices an exchange of ‘something’ happen between Tela and Gilson underneath the table. Gilson then feigns exasperation with Tela’s drunkenness, stands up, and walks back to the front entrance. He and Liam both leave out the front entrance of the tavern.

Shortly after Gilson and Liam leave, Berny Page enters and makes his way over to Celindriel, Ceona and Feadog. He orders a pint from Relyra and then asks if the party has discovered anything new. Feadog tells Berny that there does seem to be problems with the people they had previously discussed. Ceona informs Berny that they had visited with Edraele at House Caldel, and were told to meet with her later that evening and that Berny could show them where her house is. Berny nods, and informs them on where to find her house, just north of Tela Cliffoak’s house. Berny then asked if they had a chance to meet with Athyen Eddyns at the Temple of Valkur or with Ennen Kytson at the Herbalist Shop. Feadog admits they had met with Athyen and found him to be a strange individual, and that when talking with Vyncis Marte about the robed individuals visiting the Temple, Vyncis denied ever having met with them which means they met with Athyen solely. Ceona also admitted they had retrieved something from Athyen that they hadn’t had an opportunity yet to examine. Feadog produces the vial of metallic thick purple fluid and shows Berny. He examines it carefully, and then asks if any of them know anything about poisons. They all admit they don’t know anything in particular, and he then tells them that there is the potential that this is Purple Worm Poison. He mentions that he will need to question Athyen about why he’s in possession of an illegal substance. He then asks what the members found out about Ennen Kytson. Feadog informs Berny that Ennen admitted that she’s been making poisons for Rilanor under threat of death. Rilanor would bring her the components, she would brew them under his direction, and then he would gather them up and leave with them.

Berny leaned back in his chair and began to wonder if there could potentially be a way to convince Ennen that she is safe in order for her to have the courage to testify against Rilanor. The party began to side-glance one another as Berny mused over possibilities.

Berny reassures the party that they’re on the right path, but wonders if there is a connection between Athyen’s poison and Rilanor, Sylrith and Tela. Ceona asks if Berny would be willing to come along to Edraele's House later in the evening to hear what it is they have to talk about, and Berny says he’d be more than happy to. Feadog mentions that they had attempted to gain access to the Warehouse earlier that day, but were unsuccessful as the building seemed very secure. Berny admitted that they had run into similar problems when attempting to make a raid on the building. He says that they eventually had to cut through the side of the Warehouse while he positioned guards around the outside of the building to prevent any escape. Once inside, he didn’t find anything of note, but suspects some of his guards are on the payroll of the criminals. This probably gave the criminals ample time to hide any incriminating evidence before he was able to conduct his raid.

Berny then asked if the party had seen Rilanor since he had released him earlier that day after bringing him in for questioning. The party nervously responded that they should probably discuss that later while at Edraele’s house. Berny asked if there was a problem with a raised eyebrow, and the members said there was no problem, but wanted to discuss it later. The party finished their drinks and told Berny they would meet at Edraele’s house, and then made their way back outside. With the time now being roughly 7:30 pm, Kasek waits a few moments before following the others out. The party meets up and makes their way towards Edraele’s house. While enroute, Kasek informs the party as to the exchange he witnessed between Gilson and Tela.

The party arrived at Edraele’s house and lightly knocked on the door. She answered the front door and welcomed them inside. The house itself is quite lovely with lots of quality material and knick-knacks located throughout the residence. Even in a small hamlet, the High Elf in Edraele is attempting to show through by indicating her worth and status through the opulence of her home. Once inside, Edraele apologizes for not being able to answer their questions during their visit earlier, but was worried about talking about such things while in House Caldel. The party reassured her that they understood and they weren’t upset. Feadog then informed Edraele that Berny will be joining them soon. Edraele smiles and breathes a sigh of relief at the news. She then asks what the party is wanting to know. Kasek starts off by asking if she knows anything about who Sylrith or any of the others are selling their goods to. Edraele admits that she’s not entirely following what they’re asking. She says that she’s aware that the town in having some problems, but Berny hasn’t really communicated all the details to her. Kasek proceeds to tell Edraele that they’ve discovered that there are some individuals in town that appear to be manufacturing poisons. Feadog mentions the phrase ‘Tears for Friends’, and asks if Edraele knows anything about it. Edraele acknowledges that the phrase is unfamiliar, buts asks if they know anything about the poison itself. The party lists off the ingredients they found on the list in Rilanor’s house, and Edraele informs them that each of those components is indeed poisonous. Feadog asks if she knows anything about Purple Worm Poison. She informs them that while she hasn’t come into contact with it personally, she’s aware of the poison and has read about it several times. Kasek and Feadog then inform her about Athyen Eddyns and the mysterious strangers that visit on occasion. She expresses sadness over hearing that Athyen might be involved, mentioning that she had worked with Athyen on occasion in an attempt to make him more sociable and in hopes of bringing him out of his shell.

At this time a knock is heard at the front door, and Edraele moves to let Berny Page into her home. They exchange pleasantries and share a short kiss before walking over to the couch and sitting with the party members. Berny then asks what it is the party wanted to tell him. The party begins asking each other “Who wants to tell him?”. After a moment of Berny wondering what’s going on, Kasek eventually tells Berny that he witnessed Gilson exchange something with Tela at the What Ales You Tavern. Berny admits that he has witnessed Gilson, Liam, and Tela exchange coin purses in the past, which has led Berny to not trust Gilson and Liam.

Feadog then asks what Lord Andel Caldel is doing to rectify this situation. Edraele admits that both her and Berny have asked Lord Caldel to assist with the corruption witnessed within the town, and each time that it has been mentioned Lord Caldel gets agitated and states he is merely “doing his best”. Of course, Edraele admits that it’s not really their place to question their Lord….though they certainly do question their Lord in private. The party remains tight-lipped a moment before Kasek blurts out “Well….you should know…..Rilanor is dead”.

Edraele stares at Kasek blinking as Berny looks on with a little smirk on his face, somewhat incredulous at hearing Kasek’s words. Berny takes a moment, then asks “I’m sorry...what?” Ceona then informs Berny that when they were questioning Ennen Kytson, Rilanor walked in and saw Levakria. He recognized her and ‘reacted’ as one would expect. They intervened and restrained Rilanor, Levkaria spirited Rilanor’s weapon away from him and stabbed him. Edraele stands up and begins pacing nervously as Berny tries to comprehend what the party had just told him. He repeats back what Ceona said and asks how did Rilanor specifically ‘react’ towards Levkaria. The party admits that he merely recognized her, and when pressed further by Berny as to whether Rilanor made any aggressive move towards Levkaria, the party merely states that it was believed Rilanor was making an aggressive move, hence the reasoning for Levkaria to defend herself. Edraele at this time has become a nervous wreck as Berny continues to attempt to get to the bottom of what had exactly happened.

Berny then tells the party to not make any attempt to leave town until he can talk with Ennen Kytson and get to the bottom of what exactly happened. He informs the party that while he personally has no love for Rilanor, and somewhat feels the party did the town a favor by killing him, he stills needs to verify that this wasn’t the party just taking justice into their own hands by being vigilantes. If they do attempt to leave town, he will have no option but to consider them all accessories to murder, and will have to treat them as outlaws. Ceona asks what they should do if they fear for their lives and feel leaving town is the only way of making sure they survive? Berny tells them if they feel that their lives are in danger, they should notify him. He asks that the party give him the courtesy of discussing it with him before departing. If they are in immediate danger, he and his trustworthy guards will protect them at all costs.

Berny takes a moment, and then continues that he doesn’t believe there will be a problem, and he believes them all to be good people. He reminds them that there are proper ways of conducting honorable investigations. If the party decides to leave town, it would create a lot of problems both for himself and for the party members. Edraele stood nearby looking wide-eyed at the party following Berny’s statement that the party could be considered outlaws. Kasek asks if Berny intends on making the details of the investigation, and the circumstances surrounding Rilanor’s death, public knowledge. Berny asks if the party sees any advantage in doing that. The party admits that there doesn’t seem to be any advantage in making it public, at least not at this time. They tell Berny that they know Sylrith has been trying to find Rilanor, and they might be able to use that to their advantage. Berny has an epiphany and asks “Where is Rilanor now?” Kasek reluctantly admits that Rilanor is "currently at the Grinning Kobold Inn...in his room...in a wheelbarrow...hidden under several pounds of gear". Edraele leaves the room to what is assumed to be her kitchen, removing herself from hearing the gruesome details about Rilanor. Berny asks “Does Drossa know?!?” Kasek reassured Berny that Drossa is unaware of Rilanor's corpse occupying his room. Kasek explained that they wanted to wait until it was dark before moving or disposing of the body since all of this transpired pretty early in the day. Berny incredulously stated “You had just left my office earlier this morning! What did you do, leave my office and go over and whack him on the head?!?” Ceona took this opportunity to explain their version of events as previously stated, being careful not to say anything incriminating. Feadog jumped in and also reminded Berny that Ennen was scared for her life as well since Rilanor was having Ennen manufacture poisons under threat of death. Berny acknowledged that he was sympathetic to the circumstances, and he doesn’t blame them for killing him, but tells the party that there is a certain procedure for taking matters into their own hands. They cannot be judge, jury, and executioner unless Rilanor made an aggressive move that forced them to defend themselves. Feadog offered “Well, Rilanor did say he would kill us if we let him go….”, and the rest of the party facepalmed. Celindriel looked at Feadog in disbelief muttering under her breath while Ceona attempted to salvage the statement by saying she didn’t believe Levkaria had heard him say that. She believes Levkaria felt threatened by Rilanor, grabbed his dagger, and killed him out of defense.

At this point, Berny seemed resigned to the party’s actions. Kasek then asked Berny what should be done with the body. Berny thought about a moment, and Kasek asked “Would you prefer not to know?” Berny shook his head and said that wouldn’t be proper. Kasek suggests burying the body and letting the townspeople find it. Berny shakes his head and instructs the party to bring Rilanor to the Barracks. Kasek paused a moment and said “Before you make a decision...you should know...we interrogated him...badly.” Berny buries his face in his hands and begins slowly shaking his head while saying “It’s happening again….”. Feadog asks what Berny means by ‘happening again’. Berny takes a deep breath and looks at the party a bit crestfallen, but begins to tell them about his history. Edraele re-emerges from the back of her house carrying a teapot and several cups and begins to serve tea while Berny reveals his past to the party.

Berny Page was a Fighter devoted to Torm and was a member of the Order of the Golden Lion. He led a group of Paladins dedicated to the Debt of Persecution that worked with followers of Tyr and Helm fighting injustice in the Northlands of Fjoll. They came upon a small band of men camped along the base of the Sammaria Mountains. The crusading group questioned the small group of men as to their business, and while seemingly being innocent of any wrongdoing, Berny was suspicious that the men were working for the Cult of the Dragon. Berny insisted that the men's belongings be searched. When the men protested, Berny lashed out, accusing the men of treachery and was intent on taking the men back with them to Shadehaven for a trial. The men refused, and moved to defend themselves. Berny led his men in to attack the small band of men, and after the dust settled, his group of Paladins had slain every member, much to the horror of the witnessing followers of Tyr and Helm. Berny Page was sent back to the Temple of Torm's Coming, and while Jonde Garethian and Barriltar Bhandraddon supported him, the jury of his trial deemed him incapable of following Torm's teachings. Only through the pleas of the High Cleric and Pontiff of Torm did Berny earn the privilege of 'retiring' from the Order of the Golden Lion rather than being removed in disgrace.
Berny, still wanting to serve his country and follow the teachings of Torm, volunteered to serve as Captain of the Town Guard of Hirane, where he believed he could live his life in relative peace.

Berny finished by stating that going around killing people without incriminating evidence isn’t going to go well for him either, this causes complications for both him and the party members. Ceona tries to reassure him they do have some evidence against Rilanor, so it’s not quite a similar situation. Edraele sits down next to Berny and takes his hand in hers to reassure him. Edraele begins revisiting what had been already mentioned by the party, confirming that Rilanor was dead, and that Rilanor was responsible for poison manufacturing. The party also mentioned they had found Purple Worm Poison after it had allegedly been dropped by Athyen Eddyns. Berny wondered how they could connect the Purple Worm Poison, Athyen Eddyns, and RIlanor Minun together. The party suggests they take the Purple Worm Poison to Ennen Kyston and have her evaluate if it is the end result of what Rilanor had her create, and Berny agrees.

Edraele speaks up saying that she had just seen Rilanor at House Caldel meeting with Lord Caldel. She reveals to the party that she remembers Rilanor and Lord Caldel arguing over something, but she wasn’t able to make out all the details. Kasek then tells Berny that Rilanor’s dying words were for them to take down Lord Caldel with him. Berny asks Edraele to continue, and she reveals Lord Caldel gave her the impression that somebody was expected to arrive soon in Hirane to pick something up, but they didn’t have enough of whatever it was, and Lord Caldel was yelling at Rilanor about it. She said Rilanor was visibly upset, but wasn’t talking or arguing back with the Lord. Edraele says she didn’t overhear anything else...she was walking by the room when she overheard them.

Feadog speaks up saying it’s quite obvious what they were speaking about -- the poison. Berny admits there may be a connection to all of this with Lord Caldel, and the party agrees that it is starting to look that way, especially with Rilanor making the request that Lord Caldel be taken down along with him. Berny cautioned the party in trusting Rilanor’s words too much, as Rilanor may have only been saying that to get the party in trouble, or as a way of taking down someone Rilanor didn’t like. Kasek mentions that Sylrith was seen trying to reach Rilanor earlier that day, and then they spotted Tela pass something to Gilson that evening. Kasek speculates that the criminals may still be attempting to do ‘something’, and it could even be tonight. Feadog chimes in saying that perhaps they don’t have enough poison for the buyers, and they’re scrambling trying to come up with more.

The party begins discussing what to do next, visit with Ennen Kytson or attempt to raid the Warehouse. Kasek wonders out loud if there could be another entrance into the Warehouse, a tunnel perhaps. Berny nods saying it’s possible, and begins rubbing his chin deep in thought. Kasek states it’s pretty obvious they’re dealing out of the warehouse, but no one sees anyone coming or going. Kasek has an epiphany saying perhaps there’s a tunnel leading from Athyen’s cell to the warehouse considering the mysterious individuals only meet with Athyen, and they are likely the buyers of the poison. Kasek asks Berny if Ennen Kyston confirms that the purple fluid they have is in fact Purple Worm Poison, would Berny have a valid reason in removing Athyen from his cell, giving them a chance to perhaps search his quarters? Berny says absolutely, it would certainly merit him bringing Athyen in for questioning. The party agrees this is their best option forward, to confirm the poison with Ennen and then bring Athyen in for questioning. The party asks Berny to confirm the poison with Ennen right away. Berny agrees, stands and kisses Edraele and tells her he’ll be back. He tells the party he’ll head immediately over to the Barracks and gear up and let his other trustworthy guards know. He asks that the party reconnoiter the warehouse and the back of the Temple of Valkur to make sure there isn’t anything suspicious or dangerous happening. Ceona asks who would be taking the poison to Ennen’s. Berny answered that he would take it since it’s illegal to be in possession of poison within the Kingdom of Laskea. If the party were found with it, questions could be raised. At least in his hands, there is little threat to the party. Berny warns the party to not make a move without hearing back from him, and under no circumstances are they to kill anyone else unless it’s in self defense. Berny wishes them good luck, and leaves Edraele’s house.

With the time now being around 8:15 PM, the sun had set and the sky is now dark. The party leaves Edraele’s house and begins making their way across the Town Square. As they walk, they spot a dark robed individual attempting to sneak from behind the Temple of Valkur over towards the Warehouse. The party immediately attempts to be stealthy, and follows. The party sneaks along the edges of the buildings, and as they come around a corner of a building, they see the dark robed individual standing at the single entrance to the warehouse. The individual looks around suspiciously and then knocks on the door, banging out a very specific pattern. The door is then opened from the inside, and the individual makes their way inside with the door closing behind them. The party agrees the individual appeared to be Athyen attempting to be sneaky but failing.

The party discusses their options, and all agree now would be the best opportunity to search Athyen’s cell. The party then notices that, now with it being dark, there are portions of light bleeding through some of the timber boards lining the walls of the warehouse. The party decides to take this opportunity to attempt to peep into the warehouse, and make their way over to the wall of the warehouse attempting to be quiet while doing so. Ceona decides to stay behind at the corner near the Iron Lady Smithy to keep a lookout.

The party presses their faces against the boards in an attempt to see inside. Each member can only make out one individual at a time while looking in, but the party spots Sylrith inside, along with perhaps a Waterwitch sailor, and they also see Athyen standing in front of Sylrith. Much to their surprise, Athyen is angrily yelling at Sylrith. A dog begins to bark in the distance, and as a result, the party is only able to make out certain words exchanged between Sylrith and Athyen.
Athyen: <angrily yelling> “.....better make sure you have it….”   Sylrith: <attempting to placate Athyen> “...don’t worry…*noise*...we’re trying to find him…”   Athyen: “....looking into…*noise*...asking me questions…”   Sylrith: “...calm down, calm down…”
As the party continues to watch trying to make out more details, Athyen tells Sylrith to hush, and they both turn their heads towards where the party is listening. The party decided to sneak away quickly and return to join Ceona. At that moment, Berny page met up with Ceona and asked where the rest of the members were. She filled him in on the details of spotting Athyen entering the warehouse, and Berny motioned for the others to join. Berny and the party move around the buildings and position themselves in a safe area away from potentially being exposed to anyone walking by. Berny asks the party to follow him back to the Barracks, and they proceed in that direction.

Once inside, Berny reveals that he met with Ennen Kyston, and from what she can determine, she feels fairly confident the purple liquid is in fact Purple Worm Poison. However, Ennen also stated that given the description of the symptoms from Levkaria’s attack, she’s also fairly confident that Purple Worm Poison isn’t what was used to poison her. Berny then asks if the party what they found out with Athyen, and the party informs him of what they witnessed between Athyen and Sylrith in the warehouse. Berny states that not everything appears to be as it would seem. Kasek also mentions that they heard a special knock that could potentially allow them access into the warehouse. Berny begins weighing the pros and cons of gaining access into the warehouse at this exact moment, and begins ticking off how many individuals might be inside. Kasek tells Berny he’s worried that his guards are warning the criminals in advance, and feels moving on the warehouse immediately, without his guards, is their best option. Kasek states that regardless, Berny is going to have to deal with these individuals sooner or later, so why not move now. Berny agrees he’ll have to deal with them eventually, but expresses concern about them conducting an assault without knowing what they’re going up against. Berny worries that they could be outnumbered and easily defeated. Berny also brings up another matter -- the poison itself. They could walk into the warehouse and are met with poisoned weapons, poisoned arrows, etc., which could quickly turn the tables against them.

On a hunch, Berny asks if any of the party members retrieved Rilanor’s weapons after he was ‘killed by Levkaria’. Ceona hands Berny the dagger she obtained from Rilanor, and he began examining it. He then moved over near a torch burning within his office to get better lighting as he examined the blade. After a moment of looking, he asked if the party noticed the toxin coated on the blade. The party all sheepishly admitted they had not even looked at Rilanor’s weapon, but each took a turn to look. A thick dried tar-like substance similar in color and texture to burnt caramel could be seen coating about an inch of the blade near the hilt.

Kasek takes a dab on his finger and tastes the substance in an attempt to recall any information. It reminds Kasek of something he’s come across in his past, or at least something that tastes similar, but he can’t quite place what it is.

Berny looks satisfied and states that he believes this constitutes solid evidence of Rilanor being involved in criminal activity. Berny places the dagger in his desk drawer, then tells the party that they may be dealing with a far bigger threat if their foes are coating their weapons with poison. Berny suggests they attempt to pick the criminals off one at a time rather than rushing headlong into a pitched battle. The party agrees that they should perhaps start with Athyen since he appears to be the one most likely in possession of poison. Berny reminds the party that he would like to take these individuals alive if possible in an attempt to glean more information. Kasek asks if they have Berny’s blessing to move forward with being a little more forceful in dealing with these individuals. Berny states he’s satisfied that there is enough evidence to apprehend Athyen, and gives the party leave to question him. Berny also states that if Athyen doesn’t come willingly, they have the right to bring him in...one way or another. Berny speculates that by taking Athyen out of the picture, perhaps Sylrith and Tela will get sloppy. The party agrees, but wants to move immediately on apprehending Athyen.

Kasek broaches the subject of perhaps getting a stipend or payment of some sort for their services so far, and for their future services. Berny reminds them that they are already in possession of a full suit of studded armor he provided to them, and also reminds them that they did give their word that they would help. Kasek expresses his appreciation for those gestures, but states that they are now currently risking their lives for him. Berny states that he might be able to scrounge together some additional coin for them out of his salary, but instead suggests that if they are successful he will personally write a Letter of Recommendation indicating them as friends of the realm to be given at the Temple of Torm’s Coming in Sestatrea. The letter could potentially grant them a boon from the King or the Order of the Golden Lion. The party agrees this is certainly adequate compensation, and leave the Barracks headed towards Athyen’s cell at the Temple of Valkur.

The party arrives at Athyen’s cell door and quietly checks the door. Finding the door locked, Celindriel produces her lockpicks from her kit and unlocks the door in record time. The party unlatches the door quietly and makes preparations to burst into the room. Ceona takes point wielding her impressive warhammer with Kasek following closely behind, Celindriel heading in next with Feadog closing the door behind him. The party moves quickly and bursts into the room.

Upon entering the room, the party sees Athyen awake, alert, and turns to meet them within his cell. Seeing them rush in, he draws his own dagger and slits his own wrist. He then drops his dagger and smirks at the party as they rush in. Ceona rushes up and restrains Athyen, forcing him to expose his wounded arm while grappling him. She yells to the rest “Cut it off!” Kasek moves up and warns Feadog to “close his eyes”. With a swing of his shortsword, he severs Athyen’s injured arm. Athyen goes unconscious from the pain and begins bleeding out. Feadog squeals at the gruesome sight and asks “What do I do?!?” Kasek tells Feadog to sing to it, and Feadog begins playing his pan flute, casting healing word on Athyen. Athyen returns to consciousness from Feadog’s spell in time for Celindriel to approach. She whispers “You’re not getting out of this that easy, darling” and begins patting him down for any additional weapons. She also takes her dagger and slashes the leather sash across his chest relieving him of his vials of liquids. He doesn’t resist and sits with a creepy smile on his face. Suddenly he lurches and the veins beneath his skin bulge. He arches his back and his eyes begin to bug out of his skull as his skin takes on a purplish hue, and small purple worm-like shapes begin forming under his skin giving the impression that live worms are wriggling within him. His skin then sinks inward on his body and face as his innards begin liquifying. The party looks on horrified as Athyen dies, his body being consumed from within -- effectively destroyed. Celindriel draws upon her history with poisons and recognizes Athyen suffering from the effects of Purple Worm Poison.

Ceona breaks the silence by stating that this will be another interesting conversation with Berny. Feadog asks that his pockets be searched, and Celindriel deftly begins rifling through his clothes. Celindriel finds a dagger, 2 vials of a dark brown viscous material resembling molasses which reminds Celindriel and Kasek of something they’ve encountered in their past but are unable to identify, and 2 vials of a watery reddish-pink fluid which reminds Celindriel of something similar to a love potion or a potion that could potentially influence individuals when consumed. Celindriel also finds a coin-shaped emblem that no one in the party is familiar with.

The coin-shaped emblem is made from a hard metal, with gray and black enamel. The image is apparent on both sides of the coin. The party is left standing over Athyen’s ruined body contemplating what the emblem means.
