Group B Intro Session 2 Report

General Summary

The session opened as an oddly-elongated jackal-like creature ambushed the pair in the middle of the field. The visibility proved difficult as did the creature's gaze which nearly put Carson to sleep, but the group prevailed and even managed to be reasonably quiet, even if a bit of wheat caught on fire in the process. Sebastian promptly put out the bit of flame with his cloak. The dead creature shrunk to the size and shape of a normal jackal after its death.   The group began to move toward what they believed to be the south. Unfortunately, after a few moments of travel, they failed to find the edge of the field. Carson climbed onto Sebastian's shoulders, not seeing much other than the full harvest moon and stars in the sky, but a reversing of roles (thanks to Darkvision) revealed that uneven fields of wheat extended in all directions as far as Sebastian could see. In addition, the group heard the howls of jackals from the north, east, and directions in between, extending in approximately a 150 degree arc.   They proceeded away from these howls as quietly as possible, traveling for a good 20 minutes before opting to try something totally different. After some debate on strategy, the group decided to dig a hole and cover it in broken stalks of wheat to try to find a place to hide for the night using a shovel Carson secretively retrieved from his bag of holding. As they dug down a good two feet, the group suddenly saw blue sky and sunlight from beneath them. A look through the hole revealed what appeared to be the back side of a barn in a world upside down in comparison to their own as well as a fair bit of vertigo.   Assuming this barn was the one they'd seen earlier, the group climbed through the hole one after the other, resting there. Sebastian brought an armload of wheat, the stalks trimmed off, with him. The hole, from this side, seemed to resemble a large molehill that only went down about a foot into dirt. Their earlier assumption proved correct as a beagle with a leather collar rounded the corner to see the group sitting on the lawn just outside of the field and began barking at them. The trio fled into the woods on the other side of the road as an elderly human farmer chased them outside and shouted about them stealing his wheat; fortunately, the old man didn't seem willing to follow them further.   The group slept through most of the day, Sebastian hugging his wheat the whole time. Carson pulled out his bag of holding as Sebastian hid just out of sight a few trees over, allowing Sebastian a good look at the skull on the bag that stared directly back at him.   As the group awakened, the sun beginning to set, they heard the howls of jackals again, coming from the east (near the farmer's house). They walked up toward the road as the dog began to bark...and then the dog's growling was suddenly silenced with a yelp of pain. The group noticed jackals walking towards them, one of their mouths dripping with blood, as the farmer from earlier exited the house to check on "Buddy" while another one of the larger creatures simultaneously emerged from the fields.   The trio leapt into action to protect the man, surrounding him as the large creature charged toward him, thankfully unable to hurt him immediately. A jackal got a lucky shot at him, but fortunately, it dealt only a single point of damage, leaving the commoner bleeding but alive. A battle followed, in the process revealing Bren's wild magic and Carson's exceptional dice rolls combat ability as he crushed both the large creature and the final jackal in an instant in a gruesomely spectacular moment.   Carson entered the house and learned the man's name, making sure he wasn't going to die and then immediately leaving the house again. After losing his lunch, Sebastian rushed over to the dog, bringing it inside the house and setting it on the dining table. He carefully stitched its wounds up surprisingly well, managing to at least extend the dog's life. The old man thanked the group profusely, expressing confusion about the wheat-stealing (though the pair insisted they hadn't stolen any of his wheat) and offering them a reward as well as dinner.   After receiving some of the man's retirement savings as well as a nice enough dinner, the group proceeded onward toward the city of Deastok, taking a good five days of travel to get there. The odd experience and bit of practical combat provided the spark of inspiration needed to get Carson experimenting with Ki and to make sure Sebastian kept on his toes a bit better in the future. Bren expressed that she'd be departing as she had an interview with Sir Taryon Darrington and was hoping to join his brigade. By the time they arrived in Deastok after a few days travel, they'd had a few other less notable roadside encounters, but nothing all too crazy, and both eagerly waved goodbye to Bren before heading toward a tavern.
