2024/01/24: The Formian War Part 9 Report
General Summary
Knight, Kit, Malakai, Starlight, Ash There was a small wooly mammoth wandering around inside the dream-arena's treasure chest. The party collected all the loot and headed back out into the colosseum structure. Kit managed to calm the mammoth down. Apparently the little guy is a cuddler. The party took a moment to identify the derro child to make sure she wasn't the key they were looking for. She wasn't, but they did get her name: Tirabelle. While the rest of the party looked through the loot pile, Ash headed for the arena on his own. While he found the stands empty (though still loud), the arena did contain the vanishing remains of what may have been a dragon, as well as the pair of dwarves that apparently killed it. One of the warriors was among the largest, burliest dwarves Ash has ever seen. He was around 5 feet tall, with platinum hair, full plate armor, and a giant one-edged two-handed battleaxe that could strike well beyond the reach of its blade. His wargear was complemented by a businesslike dwarven lord's crown, big shoulderpads, and a flowy cloak. The other dwarf was a somewhat bald red-haired dwarf who wore a smith's apron over his armor. He wore a large greathelm and wielded a smithing hammer with an extra-long haft. The head of the hammer glowed a molten red and emitted waves of heat out to at least 30 feet away. Ash investigated the remains of their last opponent, and from what he could tell it had been some sort of monstrous amalgamation. One creature shouldn't be built like that, and it shouldn't have that many ribcages. The dwarves, for their part, appeared relatively unscathed. They were sticking close together with their reach weapons readied. Ash decided to stay hidden and observe. These warriors appeared to be very experienced, both in general and with each other. It didn't take long for the next monster to appear. This one was an abnormally large zombie behir. Ash opted to buff the dwarves with bardic music. The behir's enormous lightning breath weapon was completely absorbed by the hammer of the dwarf in the back, and the one in front returned a smashing barrage of axe strikes to the face. It only took a few more seconds for the big monster to go down. The dwarves went back to waiting for the next door to open. They went through a swarm of zombie gorillas next, and finally the rest of the party showed up. After introductions and some discussion (apparently the dwarves believed they were dead and this was some afterlife), three enormous half-zombie hydras appeared and attacked. They and their breath weapons caused some pain, but were eventually put down. Starlight mulched (literally) the small army of skeletons that came out next. Then the final door opened, and the party was confronted by a fairly alive-looking dragon. The dragon was some sort of blue-steel dragon with impressive horns and intelligent eyes. Knight introduced himself and learned that the dragon's name is Mirutar Soulbreaker. Apparently he is a blue-steel soul dragon. He claimed that his role was to "test" challengers, with the implication being that those who succeeded would return to life (from whatever afterlife this may have be) and those who failed would have their souls claimed. Seeing that this wasn't just a pointless fight to the death against an unwilling opponent, the party confidently accepted the challenge. The fight was impressively dangerous, with Mirutar striking out with a soul-hook and a room-filling blast of energy, but the party's defenses held and Knight (empowered by Starlight and the power of the stars themselves) cut Mirutar down after Kit stripped his soulfire shield. The dragon faded away, leaving behind three motes/eggs of soul and life. The fading echo of the dragon's voice told Knight that he was impressed. He "wasn't expecting that". He advised that Knight should be careful where he used the eggs. The adventurers were careful not to touch any of the motes. Fortunately, Knight found he could move them with his will, and the party was able to safely store them away in the lead box Starlight had been carrying.
