Session 12: Sailing Expedition Report

General Summary

Session 12 started with Diira, Ðupyaf, Haaða, Naava, and Milia setting sail in a salvaged boat to find a lost island.

Haaða delivered the session prologue. The party embarked on an expedition (special adventure phase) to reach the next adventure site.

Setting Sail

Diira was the only party member with some experience sailing, so he led the sailing effort. The party sailed uneventfully up the River Diira and spent a night in the town of Nifveth. The party then sailed north up the coast and encountered a chain of barrier islands.

Milia had the idea of luring in a sea serpent to guide the boat through the islands. Naava and Ðupyaf worked together to spear a fish and cook it. The smell of the fish drew a serpent out of the water. Milia tried to communicate with the serpent in dragon-speak, but discovered that it was not very intelligent. The party was able to convince the serpent to guide them through the islands regardless, and they spent several days travelling through the islands.

Pirates

As the party's boat left the barrier islands behind, they passed a narrow inlet. A ship with a black sail came out of the inlet and started chasing the party. Despite the party's best efforts to flee, the ship caught up with the party and the pirates attempted to board.

The players had some deliberation about whether they wanted to fight the pirates or not. In the end they decided they did want a conflict.

Although taken by surprise, the party saw an opportunity, and decided to try to steal the pirates' boat. Three pirate henchmen boarded the party's boat and Haaða, Diira, and Ðupyaf fought them around the deck. One of the henchmen was knocked overboard in the scuffle.

The pirate captain and his parrot then boarded the boat and fought Naava, Milia, and Ðupyaf. The parrot was shot in the confusion. The pirates surrendered and the two parties switched boats. Diira rescued the parrot and decided to keep it.

The Lost Island

The party continued uneventfully to the lost island. The island was small and rocky, and the eastern side had some semi-submerged caves. Upon landing at a small beach, the party all realized they were hungry, so they made camp. Ðupyaf caught some shellfish and cooked a meal for everyone.

The party waited for low tide, then broke camp and went into the island's cave. They would have to explore the caves at low tide, and exit before the tide came back in. They encountered the wreck of a small boat that had washed into the caves. After exploring further, they found a tunnel which ended in a cave-in. The party decided to build a drill and tunnel through the sand. Ðupyaf gathered planks and materials from the wreckage in the cave entrance and Milia built the drill. The party drilled through the cave-in and was able to crawl through into the caves beyond.

The party created a tight squeeze / crawl space through the cave-in

The Sound of Music

Beyond the cave-in, the caves split in two directions. The party heard music coming form both directions. The cave to the left carried the sound of violins and the cave to the right sounded like a tuba or large horn. The party decided to go left.

After traveling a little ways further into the caves, the party encountered a sandy tunnel that turned out to be quicksand. Haaða got stuck in the quicksand up to her waist. As she was trying to climb out fiddler crabs, making the sound of violins, appears and started crawling towards her. The party managed to pull Haaða out with a rope.

Diira had the idea of using his magical stigma, which caused him to make a sound like a ringing bell, to trick the fiddler crabs into helping the party cross the quicksand.

The Mural

The caves on the other side of the quicksand led to a large, carved wall. The carvings on the wall depicted mermaids singing and playing instruments. The mermaids had crab claws for hands and octopus tentacles for hair.

Rewards Granted

Loot

The party gained some gear and supplies from the wreck in the cave entrance, and Ðupyaf found a fisherman's hat. Diira gained a parrot.
