Personal history
I don’t remember much of my parents. Fonkin says they were really nice. I believe him, because one of the memories I have is them kissing me on the forehead when they put me to bed. It gives me fuzzies. They disappeared during a trip to trade with other islands when I was a Little. Fonk did a pretty good job of raising me, though. He turned to the temple of Likmet because, “I’ve seen what young men without proper guidance become. Take heed, little brother.” As if he would ever do anything that wasn’t proper. He’s a real stick in the mud sometimes, but he acts with care. He convinced Gnorbip, who made elixirs, to apprentice me. It didn’t work out well. I got the basics down, but making the same Nofever and Itchbane draughts all day every day was boring to me. You know what wasn’t boring? Exploring! I found a lot of cool places, too. And I found herbs and mushrooms Gnorbip needed, so it helped keep us fed. Which kept Fonk off my back about it. I also found things that looked like they came from people, but everyone said we were the first ones on the island, so I stopped asking about them.
One day while roaming, I saw an elf man who looked super important on a part way away from the town. Thankfully, I had learned a little bit of Elven phrases and hand signals while running errands in the market. I gave him an Elven Salute and said “Hello, good sir” in his language. WELL. He took offense, for some reason, and threw rocks and insults at me. Then he stormed off. A couple months later, a lot of big ships showed up, and just started blasting every bit of us they could. They destroyed every building and burrow opening in sight. And standing at the bow of the biggest one was that Elf. They started with the burrows and the people who had come out to greet them. Being one of the poorest with our hut way in the back is what saved me. I ran inside and grabbed everything important: Fonk’s priest stuff, my elixir stuff from Gnor, and the drawing of all four of us. I snuck out to the caves, and figured I knew where to find him.
Our Cave (Well, it’s really his cave. He likes to go there to sit and think, and I’d follow him up there because he’s my big brother and hero. But don’t tell him that!) is tucked away on the back side of a hill, so he didn’t hear any of what had been going on. He jumped up and stared at me as soon as I entered the cave mouth. It was pretty obvious that something BAD had happened, since I had scrapes and dirt all over and was using his robes to carry stuff. “Bim, what in Likmet’s name happened to you?!”, he yelled. I collapsed. “It’s gone, Fonk. Everything. Everyone.” He knelt next to me, laying his gentle hand on my shoulder. “Little Brother, what happened?” I reminded him of when I met the Elf, and told him about him being on the lead ship that destroyed the only home we’d ever known. Being the more nimble one, I tiptoed my way back and through the ruins to try to find survivors.
- All I saw were the dead, and sailors/marines digging graves.
- Found a backpack, and put some blankets, food, and other supplies in it.
- Found food for the 2 of us, since I had roamed a lot more than him.
- I realized I didn't know what it was that they had destroyed. What was our culture? Why did our betrothed always wear a laurel crown, then stomp it to bits during the ceremony? To get answers, I started exploring into the burrows from ways not known to Them.
- Found texts which described how to imbue things with magic and studied them at night.
- Found Buddy laid out one day after he’d eaten some rotten fish he found on the beach. Brewed up a quick draught to help and caught a couple rabbits, since he was starving. Bond quickly formed, and built a saddle and some bags.
- One day while looking for his culture’s past, triggered a cave-in that crushed his legs a bit. Was able to splint them and chug an elixir, but the bones didn’t set quite right. Fashioned some braces and outfitted Buddy with a cool spring-loaded ladder and clips to help him stay in the saddle. (No mechanical benefit. Only brings him back to normal riding skill.)
- Yet another day, Neris came upon Buddy while I was Down. She was frightened at first, but I had given him a rock imbued with magic (“Whenever tapped by a creature, the object emits a recorded message that can be heard up to 10 feet away. You utter the message when you bestow this property on the object, and the recording can be no more than 6 seconds long.” ) and taught him to tap it if anyone approached him. “I’m Buddy. Don’t hurt me, and I won’t hurt you.” Intrigued, she stuck around and found out feeding him makes him your bff. Came up wanting to show off my finds to him to discover him purring as he met her.
- Didn’t take long for feelings of betrayal to fade, as she was super nice. And a better conversationalist, but don’t tell Buddy that. She likes to sleep cuddling, even when it’s not cold and there’s plenty of blankets to go around. Maybe it’s a Merfolk thing.
- Over the years, the Coalition built a base, and a town formed around it. Used this to trade for items and get some coin saved up.
- Fonkin moved into the town and started a little temple in his house. They never bothered to care about what was here before, so the Coalition didn’t know that Likmet wasn’t an import.
- 4 decades is a long time to explore one place, and Bimdom feels the urge to explore other ruins to find what secrets they hold and what ancient inventions he can rediscover.

Neris: Merfolk
Encountered her after I came up from a tunnel. She was tentative of Buddy, but she came around. Now the three of us are best friends. She watches over Buddy while I'm Down, and even likes to hang out when I'm not. She sometimes insists on cuddling for warmth, even when we're in a cave with a big fire. She's kinda weird like that.
(This person has always loved you with all their heart and would do anything for you.)
Carric: High Elf and Coalition Spy
We got off on the wrong foot, somehow. I don't know what I did to offend him, but he's hated me since I said "Howdy!". [Bim unknowingly told him to fuck off in Elven, having been told it was a greeting]. After our encounter, Carric assumed the whole village was barbaric, and lied in his report about his reception on the island. They came in with cannons firing and leveled it all.
(You insulted or offended this person so gravely that they left your life forever. If they ever return, it will be to settle the score.)
Family Ties
Fonkin: Brother and Priest
Raised me after our parents disappeared during a trading voyage. He turned to the local shaman for guidance, while I was exploring the old burrows and looking for stuff to sell. He was a great big brother who made sure I knew what morality was. He tried to get me to join him with the religion thing, but it wouldn't let me explore like I need to. Thinks he owes me something for making sure to grab all of his holy stuff, but that's what family does for each other.
(This person owes you a debt, and they don't like it. They'll help you out when you need it, but only to clear the slate.)
Religious Views
Likmet of the Waves: local goddess
Since everything from food to travel depends on the sea, our Greatgrands would of course pray to her for safe travel and sustenance. Most of the rites are centered around what seem to be good habits. From chumming the waters right before a shark hunt to carefully checking over a boat while praying before a long voyage, I can't say they don't have any purpose. And I've seen...things...during the ceremonies that can't be explained without a supernatural force involved.
As to her appearance, Likmet is usually portrayed as a woman covered in fish scales. She sometimes has gills. I'm not sure if that solely depends on the skill of the artist or not, though.
