Personal history
May was born Mayret Falovich to a Drow couple in Nov Ostoya. Her family lived in one of the more impoverished parts of the capital, where making ends meet was often a struggle despite their hard work. Their home was nothing special, just another simple home crammed next to so many others. It was all they could afford and, for a time, it was a bright and comfortable home. However, when May's mother died, leaving her very young daughter behind in the care of a demanding father, the home became a cold and unforgiving prison for her. Edmund, May's father, was a City Guard and a drunk who often took his frustrations out on his daughter. He instilled in her a great fear of the law and the repercussions of committing crimes with rod and lash, disciplining his child and demanding absolute perfection in her behavior and achievements. May received a rudimentary education, always with her father looming over her and demanding excellence. If she was not the perfect daughter and perfect student the consequences would be dire. This treatment, as it so often does, created a young adult who met expectations but secretly rebelled.
As May grew older and better learned to appease her father's demands she began to spend more time among the guards with whom her father worked. Once she was considered capable enough to not mess it up, her father and his fellows began to have her run messages and errands for the guards. This exposure to professional men-at-arms created a new dream in May's very small world. She knew almost immediately that she wanted to protect other people and serve her country in whatever capacity she could manage. While dreaming of glory and duty, she grew much more familiar with the city of Nov Ostoya, running the streets with messages and packages and various other things to assist the guards. It was in this running around that May began to encounter the street children of the capital. Unlike her, these children seemed wild, free, and much happier than she thought a person could be. May began to spend her free time sneaking out and hanging out with these street urchins and fellow poor kids whose parents were too busy to notice or didn't care. It was during this time that May met Altros, a teen boy with sharp wits, light fingers, and a quick tongue. Altros saw talent in May from the start, and he began to cultivate that talent by manipulating May's tendency to do whatever she could to help other people.
In time May learned to sneak through the city, finding herself adept and uniquely suited for squeezing into smaller spaces as she memorized every back alley and crawlspace available. This made her much more efficient at running errands for the guards, but more importantly it made her more useful to Altros. It had taken very little for May to become enraptured in this roguish young man and his clever schemes. She didn't realize she was just another victim of a budding con man, and soon Altros managed to get May involved in less than savory activities. It was always little things like being a lookout or slipping here and there to get something. He was always careful to frame the task in a way that prevented it from sounding like criminal activity and May, charmed as she was, bought every bad story and constructed lie. She would most certainly do anything to gain, and maintain, his approval. They soon became quite inseparable, with May thinking she was gaining Altros's affection and he knowing full well she would do anything to make him happy. However, as May got older and the “help” she provided became more obviously illegal, she found herself torn between her adolescent crush and her belief in, and fear of, the laws of the empire. Perhaps this conflict led to what happened next, perhaps fate had its own plans, in any case they were eventually caught by the City Guard.
Altros had convinced May to sneak into a warehouse where, he alleged, some noble was storing the holy grail of products: strawberries. All she had to do was sneak in and get the door open, nothing else, nothing technically illegal, and certainly nothing dangerous. The warehouse was supposed to be empty. Everything went fine until the noble in question decided to make a surprise visit to the warehouse. The noble, being of a vampiric disposition, could smell the would-be thieves and summoned the guard, who chased down and caught May and Altros. The illegal act perpetrated by May shocked her father and many of the guards whom had watched her grow from childhood. The real shock would be May's, however, as Altros quickly pinned the entire thing on her. It was all her idea. She had sneaked in and opened the door, after all, and he was just there to carry stuff. This was heartbreaking for May, who received punishment at the hands of her father after he pulled every favor he had to keep her from suffering true legal repercussions. She was very lucky, considering the crime and the would-be victim of it.
With his daughter firmly under his thumb once more, Edmund decided it was time that May give up her childhood and attend to her duties as a woman. His discipline was stricter than ever as he brought in a distant cousin to teach May to behave properly as a woman in society. May's childhood adventures of running around in pants and spending time swearing with the city guard were over. Her life became dresses and sewing and cooking and laundry. Before long her father was talking about marriage and, naturally, he had someone in mind. Someone who would overlook May's small criminal mistake and gladly take her on as a wife. This, more than anything she had ever experienced, terrified May to no end. The human man, Robert, was as old enough to be her father and everything about him put May on edge. There was something about him that told May that if she became his wife her life would be much more than miserable.
With this fear driving her, and the small dreams of duty and service from her childhood still hiding within the back of her mind, May waited one early morning for her father to report for duty. As soon as she was sure he was a goodly distance from the house she stole some of his clothes, some food and supplies, and fled with all haste from their home. She fled from the home and from the capital city, immediately enlisting in the imperial army at the very next sign of civilization outside of Nov Ostoya.
Military service was hard work, but May was more than used to hard living and strict discipline. If anything, the military was more comfortable and much less strict than being under her father's yoke had ever been. All the years of running and sneaking around the city made learning to sneak around the countryside much easier for her than it was for others, and May soon found her usefulness as a member of the scouts. Once again, her ability to use her slight frame to squeeze through smaller spaces, hide in difficult locations, and just generally be lighter on her feet made her more than useful to her superiors. May also found herself among what would be the first genuine friends of her life. Marco, Deliah, and Samuel, all scout soldiers, formed a strong bond with May as they served together to the point that they were considered a package deal any time a mission would come down from command.
It was only a matter of time, but Edmund managed to locate his runaway daughter. Her military service saved her from his wrath, as she could not simply leave the army to go back to Nov Ostoya and get married. Still, her father wrote letters and insisted that she would come home and marry Robert the very moment her term of service was finished. There would be no continued service, she would return home if he had to drag her back himself. Seeing no way out, May volunteered to serve directly on the front lines of the war with Burach. Marco, Deliah, and Samuel were quick to follow. The quartet soon found themselves eating cold rations and sneaking through the woods around the Grey Spine mountains, hunting down Burach soldiers and reporting on enemy movements to their new commanders. May and her friends distinguished themselves in time, and everyone but her was promoted to leadership positions. Unfortunately, May had developed a tendency to speak her mind a little too much, and often to the wrong people at the wrong times, so her career progression was slowed until her attitude was deemed more appropriate for leadership. This didn't stop her from returning successfully from missions time and time again. It was like nothing could catch May, and the scouts with her were rarely discovered and even more rarely suffered casualties.
While serving on the front, and missing her friends whose duties were taking up more of their time than ever before, May found herself present in camp on a most auspicious day. Duchess Sandesyl Morgia of the Seven was going to be doing an inspection of her unit while on a tour of the front lines. Camp was abuzz with the prospect of such a visit, and even May was swept up in the excitement. Sure, she had lived in the capital and seen members of the Seven, but always from that comfortable distance between the elite and the common people. This would be, potentially, an up close and personal view of someone with real power. Not just someone in a position of power, but someone who's very being exuded power, and that kind of power made May a little envious. She could be free of all of her ridiculous familial obligations if she had that kind of power. The thought of it certainly tumbled around her mind in the days leading up to the visit, even though she knew it was a silly thing.
The date of the visit came and, sure as the sun was blocked at all hours of the day and night, Duchess Sandesyl Morgia indeed inspected the entire company. It wasn't a simple inspection, either, she seemed to know little details about the soldiers. If a soldier had a reputation for being good at something, from the cooks all the way up to the cavalry, she somehow knew about it. She might not have known them by name or anything so astonishing, but the fact that she knew these details made the visit that much more impactful. May was no exception to this, either, as she and the scouts were well-known for their excellence. It was during this visit, by some twist of fate or by random chance, that the Duchess took note of May. The likelihood that she was hand picked, or that she had some great allure, was highly unlikely. Rather it was probably a case of the wrong place at the wrong time, but the Duchess found herself strained by her hunger for blood and May, perhaps to run and get volunteers, was summoned to her tent. Instead of getting volunteers, May found herself in the Duchess' embrace. The details were fuzzy, her mind blurred by some means, but she remembers being willing and volunteering herself to help sate the vampire's hunger.
Something about May, or perhaps any number of factors, caused Sandesyl to have a momentary lapse in control. It was brief, but just long enough and at just the right moment that the feeding killed May. She was drained completely, lifeless and beyond saving. Due to the privacy of their encounter there were no people on hand to try to bring May back or otherwise treat her. Perhaps shocked at what she had done, or perhaps seeing no other recourse, Duchess Sandesyl had May's body disposed of discretely by her own men. The official story was that May had been killed by enemy troops while on a clandestine mission behind enemy lines, her body beyond recovery due to where she had been killed. Nobody was going to question one of the Seven, and everyone with any authority was quick to toe the line since there was no apparent reason to be suspicious. May, they said, did have a reputation for occasionally being reckless and it only made sense that one day it would catch up to her.
The Duchess left the company to continue her tour, perhaps a little more quickly than initially planned, and May's body was left in a small ravine where the soldiers had tossed it upon being ordered to dispose of her. The mistake was completely covered up and firmly out of mind. Unfortunately, or fortunately, May did not stay dead. Instead she awoke some time later, in pain but clearly able to move and think. She was disoriented, frightened, and intensely hungry. Gathering what little sense and strength she had, May climbed out of the ravine, almost oblivious to how easy the feat was to her new body. She wandered, hoping to get away from the battle lines and find her camp, but the company had moved on by the time she arrived. Unable to locate them, May found herself wandering deeper into Soma, seeking safety and shelter and something to eat. It wasn't until she encountered an innkeeper in a village that anything about her situation would be revealed to her. The innkeeper commented that they didn't see many Dhampir in those parts, which was profoundly confusing to May. Seeing this confusion, the innkeeper took pity on her and helped point out the signs that May was indeed an undead. She didn't breathe, she had fangs, her senses had sharpened, and wasn't she impossibly hungry?
With a vial of blood the innkeeper settled the matter. As soon as it was opened May was on the man like an animal. Some concerned patrons wrestled her away, but the point was made. Distressed and terrified of what was happening, May begged for lodging and then hid from the patrons and the innkeeper, trying desperately to make sense of the whole situation. She could barely remember what happened, but there was indeed an injury on her neck, the fangs were there, and she could not have resisted attacking the innkeeper if she had wanted to. It was pure instinct that defied reason. Trying to settle herself down, she attempted to do what she would in stressful situations as a scout. She took deep quiet breaths, breaths she no longer needed, and focused her mind and senses. What were the pros and cons of the situation? She made the lists and compared them, weighing the situation. It became obvious that she couldn't go back to the army as she would have to explain what had happened to her and there was no way anyone would believe her account of events. Telling anyone that one of the Seven had killed and disposed of her would get her laughed at and run out of any town where she said it.
There were some serious perks to the situation, though. She would be reported missing and, potentially, dead after enough time. It was unlikely she'd be reported as a deserter considering her track record, so the military would tell her father she was missing in action and then eventually tell him she was dead. This meant she wouldn't have to worry about being forced to marry anyone. She had no obligation to the army now that she was technically dead, so she was finally free to live however she wanted. That was an exciting prospect. The first issue was that she needed new clothes, equipment, and money. It was obvious that the solution to the money issue was to become a mercenary. If she could gain recognition as a mercenary and become a member of the Company of Free Swords she would be set as far as pay, and she wouldn't need to learn any new job skills. It certainly beat serving tables or manual labor, so May decided that was her course of action. After some rest she appealed to the innkeeper, finding a way to earn herself temporary lodging and some money to get the things she needed, especially civilian clothing. It took some time, but May soon had herself proper mercenary attire and equipment, even a rather nice weapon. Gus, the innkeeper, treated her quite fairly but eventually had to send her on her way, needing to have properly paying customers take the room she had been using. With thanks to him and his wish of luck she hit the road, eager to gain a little fame and fortune, but mostly fortune.
