Life long pirate and captain. Skilled in taking things that aren't his. Cares not for the consequences of his actions. Takes pride in the countless enemies that he has created. Takes the term "loose cannon" to a new level.
Born and raised by a pirate father, Captain Giff "Calico" Byrne grew up knowing he had a skill for taking things that weren’t his. Giff is anything but a normal thieving pirate however, he prides himself on getting caught and doesn't care about the consequences. He has amassed a group of enemies, some small and harmless and some large and dangerous. Sailors are wary that he is unpredictable and dangerous, and people who have a tendency to follow him tend to get into trouble as well.

Personal history
Born and raised by a pirate father after the death of his mother in labor, Giff grew up knowing he had a skill for taking things that weren’t his. Giff is anything but a normal thieving pirate however, he prides himself on getting caught and doesn't care about the consequences. After his father secretly retired to the countryside, Giff saw as his father's legacy was torn to shreds and forgotten. Captain "Montogmery" Byrne seemed to be a name that fizzled out and died, Giff attributes this to the fact that his father was very tactile and tried to not draw attention to himself, so Giff chose to be the opposite.
At the age of 17, he overthrew a commodore in a mutiny and gained control of a pirate armada of five ships, before it was disbanded shortly after gaining control. Giff lacks leadership skills but always wants to assume power, regardless of the situation, and insists on being called the captain. Giff has a love for the dramatic lifestyle, choosing to not plan things ahead of time and “just wing it” has always been his mentality. Giff hates planning, at least in a situation that does not warrant it, which is most of the time according to him. Giff is commonly referred to as “Calico” His nickname was derived from the Calico dresses that he once wore to imitate the mother of a grand judge to pardon himself from a local town. Giff has a nasty habit of taking responsibility for nefarious deeds even though he has nothing to do with it, just because he thinks it's fun.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Giff prides himself on the enemies that he has created, he believes that making long term rivals helps him continue his legacy. This stems from his ideology of "all publicity is good publicity, no matter how it makes you look.
Mischievous Nature:
Giff has had many misadventures. He has no limit as to what he will do, doesn't care much for getting caught so long as he can escape.
Imitating a Judge:
Giff once attempted to imitate the mother of a grand judge to pardon himself from a local town. Giff was accused of robbing a local ports bank, a crime he didn't commit but took credit for while trying to impress some women at a pub the night of the robbery. While this didn't work, and the town vilified him for this, Giff earned a nickname among the townspeople and his crew. Giff is commonly referred to as “Calico” His nickname was derived from the Calico dresses that he wore to imitate the judge's mother.
Failures & Embarrassments
He was mutinied upon by his former crew who threw him overboard during a hurricane and he drowned.
Mental Trauma
Has a fear of being overthrown and killed by his crew - this has happened to him before.
With a distinct fear of drowning, he does not like to swim in water that is not near to the shore of an island or water that is not shallow enough to stand in.
Fear of being captured and locked away by someone or something that has complete control over him - He's okay with being locked up, but only if he can identify a way of escaping, the longer he is imprisoned without a way of escaping, the more he begins to panic.
A fear of dying and not being remembered
Morality & Philosophy
Morality: Giff would never cause bodily harm to anyone who he felt didn't deserve it. He is not inherently a bad person (ie. burning down a village for fun) Giff would rob, threaten, blackmail, hold hostage, kidnap or just disrespect anyone for fun.
It is more common to hear that Giff has stolen something rather than destroying something - he is a thief and a mischievous rogue, not an arsonist or mass-murderer.
He would only kill someone if they are someone who needs to be killed or has wronged him in a significant way. Giff has a respect for other pirates that do things better than himself, but only to a degree that it doesn't encroach on harming his reputation. If he sees someone as a "playful" rival he will try to out-do them, if he sees someone who is a rival or enemy that continues to cause issues to Giff, only then will he resort to violence or killing - this is a very rare situation.
Philosophy: "Take what you can, give nothing back."
Personality
Motivation
Giff is motivated by his reputation, whether that reputation is good or bad he doesn't care. He is hell-bent on becoming a legend and disrupting the already existing legends in the world. He feels this way to try and revitalize the reputation of his father, a pirate who seemingly faded from history entirely whom nobody seems to remember. Giff knew his father as being a smart and elegant tactician who tried to not draw a lot of attention to himself. Giff's father, Gubry, had a system for pirating to be stealthy and never get caught. His father gave up the life of piracy to pursue other more conventional means in his aging years, Giff feels as though his destiny is to become a pirate legend and restore his father's glory.
Likes & Dislikes
Has a specific taste in strong alcohol
Personality Quirks
Giff never seems to learn the names of any of his comrades, choosing to call them his own names that he makes up for them based on specific features or insecurities that they have. He only ever refers to people by their true name if he either respects them or is trying to reason with them.
Hygiene
Giff doesn't particularly care about his own personal hygiene, choosing to wear pretty much the same outfit all the time. The only time that he seems to bathe is when he gets thrown overboard or has to swim. He is not opposed to bathing however if he needs to pull off a disguise or fool someone for a job, prank, or scheme.

At the age 17, she always wanted to be a pirate but feared her father. While Giff was imprisoned on the commodore ship, Esmerelda heard the many stories of Giff's travels and decided to free him and then return to Giff's ship to become his first mate for some time, before mutually agreeing to leave and find her own crew to captain. Giff and Esmerelda have known each other for 11 years but the last time she and Byrne met was 2 years ago. She and Giff have an ongoing battle of owing one another a favor, currently, she owes Giff a favor for helping her escape imprisonment from "The Bleakstry Twins" a rather large crime team with a following of various "dealers" and spies that monitor and trade illicit goods on the black market.
Marcel "Purrkins" DeAngelo Quwalski/Hekaero III
A 51-year-old Catfolk male Wizard and a store owner. "Purrkins" as he likes to be called is a good and loyal friend to Giff, who enjoys hearing of his various travels and keeps tabs on many of the important people in Giff's life. He knows where to find Esmerelda, who commonly visits Purrkins from time-to-time the same way that Giff does, in turn, Purrkins is the only person who knows where to find Giff. Purrkins is the one who gave Giff his crystal of anti-scrying, which protects Giff from being tracked by various people who want him dead. Only Purrkins knows where Giff is because he knows how to counter the magical item. Giff and Esmerelda have a system where if they need to find one another, they go to Purrkins. Purrkins also knows how Giff's father, Gubry is doing as he commonly makes the trip to see Gubry. Gubry and Purrkins are good friends and Purrkins cares for Gubry in his aging years because he owes Gubry for saving his life many years ago, long before Giff was even born. Thus, Purrkins is a family friend to Giff and Giff sees him as one of the only men he can truly trust. Purrkins also runs a store that sells various magical items or "snake oil" type products, the store is called "Purrkin's Magical Emporium of Enchantment and Wonder". Giff visits the store regularly to pick up any message sent to him under his alias, Radcliff, which he uses to have specific things sent to him or if someone wants to contact him they use that name - Purrkins knows this is to go to Giff but regularly opens his mail with no regard to privacy. While the store does sell regular magical items and enchantments, Purrkins is an inherent prankster that likes to sell non-magical items that he pawns off as being magical items to people who he thinks are not worthy of having magical items.
ENEMIES
Penelope Braithwaite
Captain of the “The Blairmore’s Revenge” and ex-fiance to Giff. Penelope has sworn to hunt Giff down and chain him in a special prison she made in her captain's quarters. She is obsessed with him. Giff charmed her into giving up the secret ritual needed to open an ancient vault that held the Braithwaite family gold - the family has a history of piracy, this vault was the collective earnings of over 5 generations ending with Penelope, who was the only person who knew the way to get into the vault, that is until she told it to Giff who insisted on knowing it because he was considered part of the family after agreeing to marry her. He escaped the ship, led a mutiny against a merchant captain, went to the island with the vault, and stole everything. Braithwait has sworn to hunt Giff down and keep him in the family vault, with her other husbands: keeping Giff as the crown jewel. She intends to lock herself in the vault and spend the rest of her days torturing him, as well as her other husbands she has wooed over the years that she has captured after Giff.
Captain Jesker Moore
For a short time, Giff was first-mate to an elvish man named Jesker Moore until Giff led a vicious mutiny against Moore, which cost Moore his ship “The Maidstone”. Giff always saw Jesker as an evil man, who would sometimes take prisoners and torture them for his own personal amusement. Jesker would torture anyone for his own personal kinks, and Giff grew tired of it. Giff began a mutiny against Jesker. With the help of the crew, Giff set Moore off in a rowboat while he slept leaving him behind in the middle of the ocean - Giff also painted the words “Mini Maidstone” on the back of Moores's rowboat to mock him. When Moore managed to track down some of the former crewmates he learned that Giff purposefully sank the ship because it was “too slow”. Moore has vowed to track down and kill Giff.
Chief Zuzoo
Native to a small island that plunders passing ships, Zuzoo was once a respected and feared leader of the Hitki tribe. Zuzoo was thought to be a god amongst his tribe, but when Giff crashed a ship “The Maidstone'' into the island and took the island over he proved that Zuzoo is just like any other person. Zuzoo had a secret hobby that he never wanted anyone to know about, he makes dolls. Giff chained Zuzoo to a crafting table and made Zuzoo craft dolls for all the kids in the tribe, which crippled his rank with the tribe's warriors. Zuzoo has vowed to return Giff to the island and kill him in front of the tribe to prove his worth. Zuzoo acts alone and isn't a pirate captain, he boards ships as a crewmate or as a stowaway to hunt Giff down.
Commodore Henry Kennway
The Commodore has been hired by a royal family to hunt down pirates and destroy them or bring them to justice, he believes in law enforcement. He acts as a hunter of pirates with strong enforcement of a judiciary system established by the elite and rich of the world. The Commodore also has a sense of pride and accomplishments among the pirates he has "brought to justice" and he wants people the be well-aware that he is better with them because of his achievements. Upon being imprisoned onboard The Commodore's ship “The Merchants Cruise”, Giff befriended the commodore's daughter, Esmerelda, a half-elf who always wanted to be a pirate. Esmerelda helped Giff escape and made her a member of the crew, while the Commodore has been hunting Giff for years to try and find where his daughter went off too - (she left the crew to become the captain of her own ship) he hunts Giff to relieve a black mark on his reputation of never letting a "dirty pirate" slip through his fingertips.
The Bleakstry Twins: Sigmond and Julius
A pair of 31-year-old conjoined twins that help oversee black market trading of stolen artwork and exotic animals. The pair are conjoined at the shoulder, Sigmond has complete control of a right arm and right leg while Julius has complete control over the left arm and left leg. Both of the brothers are heavyset and need to be cared for by a group that follows them around as servents that they pay very well.
Sigmond: Completly bald with a long beard, is an art connoisseur and known as "the Grumpy one". This brother is known for being cruel and benevolent. He always wanted to be able to paint but found that painting with one hand was impossible and his brother would always fall asleep and snored so loudly that he would disturb the painting process. Sigmond deals in high-quality art and sometimes keeps some of the best work for himself in his private collection, while also selling many other pieces on the black market. Sigmond specifically hates Giff due to the fact that he has stolen from them countless times. On one occasion Giff helped Esmeralda escape from the twin's custody after she was caught trying to steal Sigmond's crown jewel, a painting of their father that shares a striking resemblance to the twins. While this painting holds no real value, it has significant value to Sigfred because it depicts a life he wishes to have, one free of his brother and his forever bond to him.
Julius: long hair and baby-faced is known as "the dumb/nice one". This brother tries to get along with everyone and tries to be fair, but is mostly dominated by the conflicting ideology of Sigmond who tends to get his way most of the time. Julius loves exotic sea creatures and deals with the other half of the pair's black market business. At an early age, Julius always wanted to swim with these exotic sea creatures, but due to his condition swimming became a very impossible task, also his brother Sigmond hates large bodies of water and refuses to go near them or to get on any ship. Julius actually kind of likes Giff for no other reason than he thinks he is funny, he is regularly happy to see him but his brother has to remind him that the two of them are supposed to hate Giff.
