History
Early Life
Olrik was born to Gardain and Killia Silverstone, the high priest and priestess of Moradin for The Dwarven Holdfast. His childhood was largely spent learning from his parents about the greater cosmos and the path of Moradin, God of Creation. During his studies, Olrik befriended the young scion of the Arcanaforge clan, where he developed some skills in smithing.
Priesthood and Family
On his 50th nameday, Olrik was welcomed into the priesthood of Moradin, God of Creation, and took his first steps as a cleric. In the following years, he was sent into the depths of the earth with the expeditionary forces, where he met Eldeth, a young scout of the Thunderstone clan with a unique talent to traverse the stony depths. After several years of courtship, Olrik and Eldeth married.
With a new focus and family, Olrik and Eldeth retired from the expeditionary forces and took on new roles within the Dwarven Holdfast. Olrik took to teaching and leading his fellow dwarves in the ways of Moradin. Eldeth began teaching what she had learned of the arcane arts while raising their three children: two sons and a daughter.
With the passing of his parents, Olrik was named high priest of Moradin, God of Creation for The Dwarven Holdfast Temple, at the age of 189. Along with his religious duties, Olrik was also appointed as a royal advisor to king Daravin Steelbeard, ruler of the Dwarven Holdfast.
Cataclysm
In the months leading up to the Cataclysm, rumors and warnings reached the Dwarven Holdfast. King Daravin Steelbeard convened his council of advisors to discuss their response. While some of the advisors advocated for sealing themselves away from the other races, Olrik and a few others argued against it. He insisted that Moradin would protect his children as they protected others. In the end, he was unsuccessful, and the Dwarven Holdfast sealed their borders to outsiders. Even still, Olrik continued to preach that Moradin would ensure his children were protected from whatever this great cataclysm would be. For who was more capable than the god of creation himself?
Then the Cataclysm came, and the very heavens were sundered. Moradin, God of Creation, and most of the other gods vanished. Either fallen or missing, no one knew, but immediately, the priests, clerics, and holy warriors of the churches lost their divine powers.
During the separation of realms, the clan was split in two, with roughly two-thirds remaining in The Dwarven Holdfast within the Shieldbein Bubble. The other third of the clan remains missing to this day. Some of those lost clan members include Olrik's eldest son Harbek Silverstone and daughter Diesa Arcanaforge as well as their families.
Post-Cataclysm
With two of his children and a third of his people missing only a year after losing his wife, Olrik broke. At first, hopeless and disillusioned, Olrik simply sat and stared into the void, doing little more than the minimum to stay alive. After years of wallowing in self-pity, and with the prodding of his remaining son, Beloril Silverston, Olrik resolved to discover what had happened to the world and the cosmos. He secluded himself in the temple once dedicated to Moradin, and what started as a distraction soon became an obsession as he scoured lost tomes for forbidden knowledge. Deeper and deeper, he delved, first with the religious texts of Moradin, God of Creation, then other gods. Still further his studies took him, he studied the arcane laws that governed the cosmos until he stumbled into occult knowledge.
Angered by his abandonment of their people, King Daravin Steelbeard stripped Olrik of his position and almost called for his execution, but Olrik's years of exemplary service held his hand. Olrik had not been the only one to lose faith and family all at once but had selfishly sought isolation when his people needed him most.
After several decades of maddened seclusion, Olrik returned to find much had changed with his people. A ceaseless bloody war had raged during his absence and changed his people from a culture of crafting and artistry to one of war. In his absence, and the absence of their god, his son, Beloril Silverston, had proven himself in battle and risen the ranks to become a commander of King Daravin Steelbeard's armies. Over the next several years, Olrik dedicated himself entirely to rebuilding his relationship with his remaining son and new grandchildren, sorrowful and angry at himself for missing their early years.
In the coming decades, Olrik dedicated himself to the study and understanding of theOctennial Convocation. Not to worship as a priest, as he would never again trust in the powers of another, but to gain insight into the laws of the cosmos and the greater powers that govern them. With the powers that understanding brought, Olrik took to the battlefield to support those who struggled for the survival of their people.
