History
Early Life
Kellan Galeheart, son of Athos and Elaina Galeheart , was raised in an obscure village of Stonewillow near the mountains in north Shieldbeinn Bubble, close the boundaries of the bubble that separates their lands and The Mists.
At a young age Kell dreamed of adventure and glory. Every night as a young lad, he would listen to the brave tales of the age before the Cataclysm, and the tragedies that befell their lands. The children of the village loved stories of magic and sword bearing heroes, but Kellan was an odd one. More so, than anything, he preferred the stories of the legendary Monk Ciril and his glorious rise to be a guardian of the Rift.
Guardians of the bubble can’t be everywhere at once, for they regularly deal with those that wander out of The Mists, sometimes in an intentional organized assault. This was a grim fact for Kellan’s quiet village. One night, disaster struck when shady figures in the night began an incursion of, what could only be described as, shadowy nightmares wreathed in despair. The village was razed to the ground. While his family was spared from oblivion, more fortuitous than many that night, they no longer had a place to call home. Kellan felt grief for friends and neighbors lost, and resolve that he would find an end to this imprisoned hell from the Mists.
The Galehearts among other survivors became refugees, searching for a new place to settle. Weeks of rambling brought them to the foot of the mountains in a village beneath the Goldenray Monastery. Kellan’s determination burned at the sight of the monastery. At that moment he knew what called to him. He would find a master, become a master of martial arts and protect those who could not protect themselves.
Acceptance to Goldenray Monastery
When Kellan came of proper age, he pleaded to the monks of the Goldenray Monastery to accept him as a student.
Goldenray Monastery is a secluded cloister in the mountains, home to a very small community of monks and nuns living their faith in the Morninglord in isolation. While reclusive, the the monestary is not without reputation: It is gorgeously architected, hewn straight from the rock of the mountains and carved with murals, reliefs, and statues to Lathander. At the break of dawn, heavenly hymns to Lathander echo off the mountains, sometimes reaching the valleys below.
The monastery has a daily schedule of corporate prayer, private prayer, tasks for the upkeep of the monastery (cooking, cleaning, farming, etc.), some time for study and personal development, and a couple hours of free time. Weekly and monthly, there is a rotation of monks that go out to the towns to sell crafts and goods, participate in the festivals, and acquire things the monastery needs, such as materials or skilled labor. Being so close to the frontier, it is common for the Lathanderians to learn the basics of self-defense for both the monastery and the nearby town.
When asked what he desired from Goldenray Monastery, he thought he could outwit with what he thought would be considered deep. “serenity” Kellan eagerly replied. Even with the purest of intentions, Kellan would have been turned away. They denied him, saying "We actually just ran out of serenity yesterday. Maybe check the markets in town?” Kell should have seen this coming. “Actions speak louder than words”, he thought. So, Kellan prostrated himself at their doorstep for 3 days. At dawn of the fourth day, Kellan was tonsured as “Awakened” and brought in as a Novitiate. He is given elementary books for study in the basics of the Church of Lathander, martial arts, the daily schedule, as well as the history of the Goldenray Monastery. While reading through the chain of members, he sees a name at the very top of the page, “Ciril ”. Kellan is struck with utter shock upon realizing who that might be.
Pupilage to the Dawnmaster
Months pass after being accepted to Goldenray as an Awakened. Kell feels most uncomfortable with the idea of free time so he dedicates every moment into training in hopes to impress Dawnmaster. He became obsessed with the desire to improve. Yet, it almost seemed like he was invisible to the Dawnmaster . It wasn’t until weeks of this went by that he found meditation as a means to deal with his frustrations. Meditation became one of the few things in Kell’s life which came oddly natural to him. He reveled in the stillness of body and mind, imagining he was a still pool of water. At that moment, he stopped trying to impress and lived in the moment and let things be what they were, he went with the flow and indeed in the end found serenity.
One day Kell is approached by the Dawnmaster of the monastery. Ciril revealed he was aware of his need to impress and would not approach Kell until that need had subsided, for as he stated with a wink “There is no secret I don’t know within my own walls”. Ciril accepted Kellan for the occasional lesson as he saw potential from him. The new training regimen was grueling, stretching his spirit and mind to the very brink. Days become weeks, then months, then years.
7 years later, Kellan, a man of 25 is brought to take the trials and passes with flying colors. “You have mastered the foundation of the arts. You now are at a critical juncture in your training, and there are many paths to choose from as a monk of Lathander . But--", with a twinkle in his eye, "might I make a suggestion?” Ciril asks. He hands him a tome, weather-worn and a distinct aroma of petrichor, “The Way of Still Waters”.
Departure
While bartering in the nearby town below the monastery, a message runner catches Kellan's eye, darting directly for him. It's a note from Ciril requesting his presence. Ciril wishes to make use of Kellan to do some information gathering for the Monastery as it is part of his purview as a guardian to keep well informed. "It would also be an excellent first quest outside the Monastery for you, give you perspective." Ciril instructs Kellan to report when he can and to stay vigilant to any news regarding events related to the The Mists. He tells Kellan that he must start somewhere and just so happens that very start was already accepted in his name. Kellan started, but accepted graciously. Ciril bid him farewell and to not be a stranger. What did he mean by THAT, it's just one mission...
And so, Kellan gathered his things and given a stipend to help him along his journey to the great capitol of Shieldbeinn. He purchases a spot on the next caravan of traders destined for the capitol, where he awaits the introduction to an introduction to a team with a rather daring task.
