Full name Slembulkla /slɛmbulklɑ/ of Port Hren, he is usually referred to as "Slem." Or derisively as "Slug" (particularly by his nominal alley, Akabar of Ysfet).
Kla'a /klɑʔɑ/ was his mother's name. He was raised by his "aunt," Bul'a /bulʔɑ/; it is from their name and his origins in Port Hren that his full name—Slembulkla t'Hrenōeth—was constructed: Slem son of Kla'a & Bul'a, from Port Hren.
Born into abject poverty in the Warrens of Port Hren, Slem was a street urchin who found himself press-ganged into service aboard a pirate vessel. In some ways, this was a grand opportunity that the boy had never experienced before. He found stability, some measure of wealth, success, and even familial affection with the crew. The captain became his mentor.
Unfortunately, after years as a pirate, his ship run around on reefs and was scuttled before Mbaran admirality could sieze it. His captain died. Slem returned to Port Hren and took up work as a heavy for various gangs.
It was in the service of one of these gangs that he met Oroyonn, the Hierophant of Annen and once more his life was changed forever.
Appearance
Physical Description
A burly, barrel chested giant of a man, Slem towers over most other humans. He has blue eyes and a pale, but tanned complexion. He is likely of Kharnnish and/or Qh'énnish extraction, but considers himself Hœmmé. A mess of shocking red hair in curls covers his head and melds into his prominent beard. He is heavily tattooed from his time in gangs and as a pirate. Most prominent is the solar disk in bluish ink on his belly. His beloved former captain helped him to get it when he was in the captain's service: the captain was a devout Tsaunnist. He prefers to be shirtless or wear little on his chest, if only to show off his devotion to his lost captain.
He is more intelligent than he appears, or lets on, and is quite strong and agile.
Facial Features
Slem always wears some sort of facial hair, varying between a full and luscious beard, to braided beard, friendly muttonchops, or a horseshoe moustache. His hair is usually a wild mess of red, but occasionally he shaves it bald.
Identifying Characteristics
His massive girth and height and red hair make him stand out. His tattoos (most notably the solar disk on his ample belly) are instantly recognizable.
Mentality
Personal history
He was shanghaied into sailing but found he was naturally adept and excelled at sea. He found favour in his minotaur captain Okhashedeth the Jèredeth, who trained him well. He ascended to the rank of first mate before their ship was attacked by Ptarshakkians, Captain Okhashedeth was slain and the ship was scuttled.
After a time as a prisoner-galley-slave, Slem was released and returned to Port Hren. He worked there until the collapse and refugee crisis of the Third Ptarshakkian War. He then, like many others, desperate turned to questionable actions and banditry.
It was in this vocation that he met his new "captain," Oroyonn Jèredeth, Hierophant of Annen.
Originally seeking a new "captain" after his last died and in the shipwreck that ended his sailing career, Slem sought out the peasant populist leader, Moloch. However, when meeting the minotaur outlander, Oroyonn, he knew he had found a new "captain."
He is foolishly(?) in love with Oroyonn and will follow him into hell and back again. He is fearless about his "captain," and will obey him without question.
He is frightened of magical and supernatural things, but in awe of Oroyonn, Oroyonn's faith, and Oroyonn's divine powers. Slem lacks the learnin to ask the questions but he would seek to be Oroyonn's acolyte if he knew how to do so. He is more than eager to convert to Oroyonn's faith.
Slem does not trust Creston or Akabar of Ysfet, but was fond of Barris before he became Barkael. Slem has some prejudice against Ptarshakkians, given they sank his former ship.
Mental Trauma
Having suffered from such loss at very young ages, Slem fears abandonment and/or betrayal.
Although it was very meaningful for him at the time, his relationship with his first captain was not consensual. He was captured by a press-gang and brought aboard the pirate ship where he was forced into servitude as cabin boy. However, he was treated well by the captain, and ascended ranks quickly due to his skills, aptitude, and devotion to the captain, he was raped by him and did not join his service willingly.
person.sexuality
Since his youngest days, Slem was aware that he was in love with older, bigger men.
He served as cabin boy aboard his first pirate ship, and fell deeply in love with his captain.
After the death of his captain he maintained his sexuality in secret as he worked as a tough enforcer for gangs.
He met and joined the service of the Hierophant of Annen.
Slem and the Hierophant eventually married in the manner of the Ptarshakkians.
person.gender_identity
Slem presents as hypermasculine but not in an overly controlling way.
