Personal history
Duvaega was born as an orog in the tribe of Dummik. Many of the orcs in the Dummik tribe believed that orogs such as Duvaega were blessed by Luthic, and thus were a gift to the tribe. However, the chief of the Dummik tribe feared orogs, and felt tempted to kill Duvaega to preserve his position as chief. The chief knew that killing a blessing of Luthic would likely anger her, so Duvaega was raised out of sight of the rest of the tribe by her mother. By direct orders of the chief, Duvaega was never allowed to leave the shrine to Luthic or the small cave adjacent to it that her mother caved out for her. The only person allowed to visit her was her mother. Her mother, in her visits to Duvaega's cave, passed her knowledge of potion-making and animal husbandry to the young Duvaega. Due to being an orog, Duvaega was able to pick up on her mother's teaching incredibly quickly compared to other orc children of her age. Even before reaching maturity, Duvaega was raising and experimenting with different plants and fungi to contribute to her healing potions.
When Duvaega finally reached maturity, around the age of 12 or 13, she was married off to the orog chief of the Ulkrunnar clan, Volbrig Ulkrunnar, as part of a treaty. This was also done as an act to remove her as a threat to the chief of the Dummic tribe. Duvaega gladly took the role of Volbrig Ulkrunnar's wife, viewing it as an opportunity to be free of her forced seclusion. Upon joining the Ulkrunnar tribe, Duvaega enthusiastically exchanged knowledge with the other women of the tribe. She shared her vast knowledge of potion-making and animal husbandry. In exchange, she was taught druidic witchcraft and how to raise cave bears as effective battle mounts or guard animals. She would begin to use her magic to help carve out the tribe's cave, enhance her potion-making skills, and more efficiently heal the wounded.
Over her lifetime, Duvaega birthed over 30 of her and Volbrig's children, raised many of Volbrig's bastard children, and helped to midwife and care for the majority of the other children in the Ulkrunnar clan. Duvaega eventually became the lead healer and midwife in the Ulkrunnar clan, a priestess of Luthic, and the go-to person for new mothers seeking aid. However, Duvaega eventually became too old for childbirth. Much of her strength, dexterity, and keen memory faded with age. Once Volbrig learned that she was too old for childbirth, he cast Duvaega out of the tribe. He ignorantly thought that she was no longer of use to him and was a waste of food and resources, despite her skill as a healer and her aged wisdom. However, she was stubborn and convinced Volbrig to let her stay in the clan until her youngest child reached maturity. He reluctantly agreed, letting her stay for a bit longer.
Soon after being told that she could stay, Duvaega discovered that her husband intended to divorce her and re-marry with a young tanarukk. Duvaega became furious. She warned Volbrig against this act, expressing that it would only bring fiendish chaos and destruction to the tribe. Duvaega was disregarded, and Volbrig convinced her own children that she was becoming senile and was not to be respected. Duvaega brewed in her anger for another 12 years while her youngest son grew up. She used this time to plot her eventual brutal vengeance against her ex-husband should he cast her out.
Determined to prove her worth even in her old age, she decided to mix her witchcraft with martial prowess. Many orc tribes, including the Ulkrunnar tribe, forbade females from touching weapons. Duvaega grew out her nails, coated them in magically made charcoal, and lacquered them in imitation of Luthic. Luthic rewarded her by making them as tough as iron and able to channel her magic through them to cause life-stealing necrosis in her foes. Despite her best to prove her worth to the tribe, Volbrig kept true to his word. As soon as Duvaega's youngest child became of fighting age, Duvaega was banished from the tribe.
Duvaega left the tribe and headed directly towards Driftriver with as much wealth as she could sneak out. While she was no match for her ex-husband and his new wife, skilled adventurers wishing to rid the material plane of his presence would most certainly prove a much larger threat.
