Additional Backstory

by Sask

When Sask was young and only newly inducted into the druid enclave, he would only spend a little time with the members of his order at their central shrine. During this period he also worked for various farmers gathering crops. These chores brought him into to contact with an especially cruel merchant named Tannin McCaellister. McCaellister had wealth and he liked to use it to force farmers and commoners into his service through malicious means. At the end on a particularly dry growing season, Yeoman Rouss had no where near his promised quota of vegetables providing McCaellister with the kind of leverage he could use to pressure landowners into selling him acreage. Yeoman Rouss was also a known apiarists, often offering his honey to the druids for use in brewing in exchange for help with his crops. Weather is weather after all, so the brethren of the wood could do little to boost Yeoman's yields. Even so, the farmer had promised his current season of honey to them and it was on an appointed day that Sask had been sent to collect it. Sask arrived to load the three full ceramic crocks onto his cart but found that Yeoman had been beaten and the honey taken by McCaellister in lieu of his loss on the vegetables he could not sell. Yeoman apologized and promised the next two seasons to make up for the druid's loss. He explained that while what the landlord had done was wrong, it wasn't illegal in any sense. Yeoman had parted with the honey so he would not be made to hand over 10 acres of his best, most fertile land. The loss now would buy him time to make up his debt to McCaellister. Sask was incensed at the injustice. He knew of other farmers, now in servitude to the horrid landlord or worse, completely destitute. The man's greed had consistently ruined many lives in the region. Sask would act and he knew exactly how. That very night, he stole his way into Tannin McCaellister's cellars where he propped open the lids on all three crocks. On his way out, he also let open the wax-coated window into the cellar and left without ever being seen. Early the next morning with hardly any light brimming the horizon, Sask convinced Yeoman to accompany him to Lavendale Spring for a fishing trip. His crops, such as they happened to be, were harvested and he had a bit of time before had to break ground for fall and winter crops. A trout dinner would put a bright lining on a darker than usual season. They passed through Rabbab's central shrine to let his elders know his plans for the next couple days and promised to bring the catch home when he was done. The fishing was good so they stayed on another day and were joined by a few of the brethren the evening of the first day. The second days fishing was better still and the brethren with Yeoman in tow made a delightful feast for the elders at the shrine. It was quite a surprise when Tannin McCaellister showed up on the evening of the third day with the village constable accusing Yeoman of stealing the honey back from him. It was quite a scene with most of the brethren being in their cups arguing that Yeoman had been with them the last three days practically to the moment that McCaellister had taken possession of the honey. Discussions and counsels were had over the course of a few hours and it was judged that McCaellister lacked the proper caution in his storing of the honey and that indeed he was robbed but not by Yeoman or any other man. It is known by many that bees work ceaselessly to produce the sweet concoctions they need to survive. What is lesser known is that bees much prefer to carry away honey already made rather than waste the energy making it from scratch. Sask knew of this from his lessons, observations, and conversations with Yeoman Rouss. The landlord practically threw the constable off his horse when he realized he had neither honey or a culprit to blame his loss on. And stories being too good to hold in for very long, word finally reached the ears of McCaellister that a young half-orc scamp druid initiate had made it easier for the bees to make off with the honey the landlord had first stolen. From that moment, Sask had a mortal enemy.
