Hailing from the evergreen village of Jaskif in the Duchy of Faysea, Rik was born into the Bogach family to 8 siblings.
Rik, being the youngest of his family was often seen as the "runt". Even for a Firbolg, he wasn't as strong or as smart as his siblings. But, he always found reprise in hiding in the woods and playing with the local wildlife. His early life involved some simple but rigorous farm work, as their family is apple farmers, which were a common food source in the surrounding evergreens. Rik also held resentment toward his parents, as he was often neglected for his more prolific siblings. And, even towards his siblings, as he was typically the butt of most pranks and jokes.
One day during Rik's adolescence, his brothers decided to play a prank on him by teaching him how to climb a nearby pine tree. They convinced him to climb to the highest branch, and when he reached it through the encouragement of his brothers, they ran away leaving him stranded. Upon trying to climb down the tree, a branch that was being used as a handheld snapped, sending Rik plummeting a staggering 40 feet. The last thing Rik remembers was the sensation of rushing air, and a rapidly approaching ground.
After waking up in his bed with a pained headache, Rik felt resentment towards his siblings after. One such incident was when Rik was out picking apples, he decided to poke fun at his older brother by throwing an apple at them. The apple struck true, but Rik liked the way it made him feel. So he continued to pelt his brother with apples, until he was in the fetal position, arms up guarding his head. Rik was punished heavily for this, and Rik was left wondering what made him lose control and continue his tirade. Other small incidents began arising from time to time, from vocal outbursts to physical confrontation, which hinted at some mental instability as a result of his accident.
When Rik reached his 17th year, the teenage equivalency for humans, tragedy struck the family. A blight struck the village's farmland, the family's orchard included, causing many to starve and scrounge for food. 3 siblings of Rik perished in the famine, leaving Rik in a state of intense depression and mental instability. Still maintaining the facade of his personality, Rik felt an intense sensation of betrayal. The only constant in his life was his attraction to the woods and nature, and he retreated there more often since tragedy struck. He, while still friendly on the surface, became more and more unpredictable and chaotic. The swamp and woods appealed to him as an escape from his mental state, where he could leave his body and be filled with the joys of discovery, of birds chirping, in taking in the flora and fauna.
On one such of these excursions, Rik noticed a shiny object in a clearing. Moving over to investigate, a stoppered bottle was lying in the grass. Ever-curious, Rik picked up the bottle and removed the stopper. A green smoke began pouring out of the bottle, materializing in a totem-like depiction of a guardian, or warrior. The figure spoke to Rik in a powerful voice, promising vast powers in return for protecting his lands from encroachers and bad actors all across the land. Rik wholeheartedly agreed, to which the figure retreated back inside the bottle, stopper and all. Rik initially felt no different, until a staff apparated in his hands, and a mental caw was heard from the hawk that had landed on his shoulder.
