Kale is from the treacherous town of Evendahl. Born to a human pirate father (Poyle Jip) and a human healer mother (Caitla Jip), Kale grew up surrounded by influences of the sea. His family owns and runs an inn/tavern called The Rusty Tankard, where he grew up as an only child. He learned how to run the bar, gambling tasks, and fighting from his father, and cooking, healing, and innkeeping from his mother.
Poyle had a long career as a pirate who served under the infamous Captain Hawkins. Poyle only knew Hawkins at the later stages of his pirating career aboard the Hispaniola, but he learned much from him. When Hawkins was young, before he even captained the Hispaniola, he apparently found the long lost and forgotten island of {insert name}, but was never able to locate it again after narrowly escaping a dark and powerful force. After about a decade of plundering with Hawkins and his crew, Hawkins passed away from old age, and Poyle decided to purchase his own small, blimp-led airship to live out of and travel. While spending time in Regalport, he met a mysterious and beautiful woman named Caitla.
Caitla grew up in a farming village near the coast of {insert name} Island, just a couple days' journey from the city of Regalport. Caitla is an orphan who was raised by a large and mostly joyful family. Caitla was found floating ashore on a small rowboat as just a baby. Although she looked like a normal human, there was something special about her. When learning the crafts of cooking, farming, animal husbandry, and sailing, Caitla had supernatural abilities that her siblings did not have. The food she made had incredible magical effects and she seemed to have a natural attunement to the sea, and could even sail and navigate better than even her father without any teachings by the time she was able to walk. As it became obvious that Caitla was destined for more than the life of a farmer, her parents explained how they found her, and at the age of 12, Caitla made the decision to move to Regalport on her own in an attempt to learn more about her magic abilities and her true origins. After surviving on morsels while homeless, she stumbled into the Hall of Olladra, which is less of a temple, and more of a booming tavern, inn, restaurant, brothel, performance center, and gambling center. Olladra, of course is one of the Sovereign Host, a pantheon of originally fifteen gods, and later nine gods that hold sway over mortal life. She, depicted as a beautiful halfling, is the sovereign of feast, fortune, and gambling. She is also known as Ollarasht the Gambler. The establishment’s owner is an elf named Mariah, who is a follower of Olladra from The Misty Isles and a magical purveyor herself. She immediately noticed Caitla’s talents, and provided her with more conventional magical training, along with a job as a cook for over 10 years. Caitla learned to commune with Olladra, who also could not quite determine her exact origins, but could feel that Caitla’s powers are directly related to the sea and the clouds. Caitla met a handsome young man, who, while clearly a pirate, was somehow different and more composed. Caitla certainly did not mind that Poyle enjoyed the promiscuity of the brothel and picking fights with the bnb local pub inhabitants, and Caitla was encouraged by Olladra to participate in all joyous activities as well. Caitla and Poyle met and fell in love. Having learned all that she could learn, Caitla joined Poyle in his travels. They travelled far and wide for many years, before settling in Evandahl, and purchasing a small plot of land to start their own establishment.
Kale has lived in Evandahl for his whole life. Similar to his mother, it was clear that he had innate arcane and shipworthy abilities. By the time he was 8 years old he was a master chef, skilled mixologist, a skilled airship pilot and sailor, an experienced gambler, and an all-around great patron of Olladra, the deity of good fortune, feast, gambling, and pleasure. In addition, Poyle began teaching him basic combat skills from a young age to prepare him for any adventure that lies ahead. A couple of Poyle’s old pirate gnome companions named Peepa and Bop (married) also helped with things around the tavern, both with musical and entertainment-related skills. Caitla received a Mastiff named Buddy from her friend Mariah to serve as a guard dog for the tavern. However, not all of Kale’s childhood was spent in Evandahl. Caitla and Poyle took Kale to Caitla’s original home on the farm sometimes during the warm months, journey to the Hall of Olladra, and each parent would bring Kale along to a few other ports to acquire special ingredients or items for their business. As a teenager, Kale began to desire to set off on his own adventures, and attempt to find the origins of his innate magical abilities. Although not quite able to commune with Olladra himself, Caitla received many blessings from Olladra for Kale to pursue his own future.
