Lucien Hallow lives deep within the hilly backwoods in a small town called Raconteurs' End. A haven for natural beauty, tourists looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city often find themselves looking for solitude in Rac Town, as the locals call it. Lucien often finds work as a guide of sorts, showing the visitors the “hidden treasures” of small town life in Rac Town. These visitors often find themselves parting with their valuables on these tours; money, luxury items, designer clothing, anything that could be seen as excessive or unnecessary. But they never get robbed. See, Lucien has always had a way with words, with stories. His silver tongue simply convinces these people to part with their goods, whether through pity, charity, or being convinced that eschewing their material luxuries will lead them to happiness or spiritual connection. Robbery through force or intimidation is gauche, and Lucien would never stoop that low. A gentleman to a fault, Lucien follows all the rules to the letter. But there’s no crime in telling people of the charms or simple life, or how tough life here is, or how much Lucien wants to follow his dreams but only needs a little more money to pay for a motor carriage, or even that the horrors and hauntings that come out late at night are drawn to wealth and it’s just for the best not to risk that. That’s Lucien’s favorite story to tell. His fascination with the macabre and otherworldly is often offputting to others, but there’s a morbid curiosity that draws people in nonetheless. And to tell the truth, Lucien finds himself relating to these stories and legends of beings and entities just at the edges of your vision, there for the briefest moment before you turn your head to look and see nothing. Or the whispers you hear when you’re up somewhere high and think “jump.” When you’re in a boat and think about just slipping into the water and being lost forever. Stories of The Other, walking among the people, waiting, and watching. Empty coffins, mysterious lights drawing you off the path, a stranger knowing just a little too much about you. All these little unexplained phenomena that get brushed away, out of sight, out of mind. Lucien lives like The Other. Listening, learning. Watching, waiting.
