My name is Maya and life as not been easy for me. I lost my mother the day I was born, my father when I was 8 leavening me alone with no one. My only saving grace being that before he died my father, who was a Ranger, taught me how to survive in the wilderness. At the age 37 I meet a human druid and she could see the raw talent I possessed and trained me in the craft for the next 10 years before moving on. Over the next 255 years as my skills and knowledge grew so did my reputation as a guide in the small village of Coone, as one of the only guides to be able to take a group big or small through even the most difficult terrain with little to no problems. Life was pretty simple with nothing relay changing, until one day, Xaviar showed up.
I was in the village market stocking up on a few items when he approached asking if I would take him to Mirage Falls, an area know for it's natural beauty and serenity that one feels there. For a moment I was stunned, I had not seen another drow since my father died, but recovered quickly and agreed to take him. After that every few weeks he would retern and request for me to guide him some where else. After the 3rd time instead of telling him to meet me in the town square I offered for him to stay the night with me and that I would make him dinner and we could leave at first light, to my delight he accepted. After dinner instead of retiring for the night, we spent it talking and getting to know one another. This was the most I had ever heard him talk for usually he was very quiet, not saying much on our long hikes to where he wanted to go. By the light of dawn something had changed between us, instead of walking a step or two behind me he walked next to me and even after talking the whole night we still found more to discuss. Over the next few years we grow closer. I would find moon flowers in seemingly random places around town and on some days be given a bouquet of them by friends and shopkeepers with them only saying that they where from a secret admirer. Every time I would look for Xaviar but never spot him. 3 year after we met he asked me to marry him, I said yes without any hesitation. For the next 27 years we lived a happy quiet life. I would still guide people and Xaviar would come along to help, and he would also work to repair different firearms for the townsfolk and people that came into the area to hunt.
That all changed late one night, with a crash our door was was kicked in startling me awake. Xavair reacted in an instant, flying out of bed grabbing a chair and hurling at the man that came in before leaping forward to tackle him to the floor. I let out a cry is suddenly another man appears in the doorway and kicks Xaviar hard in the side causing him to fall to off of the man he had tackled. My eyes widen as two more men follow behind the one that delivered the kick, I can discern nothing of their features for their faces are covered in masks. As the one that Xaviar tackled climbs to his feet they surround him. As the first blows fall I scream praying that my voice would carry to the nearest home but knowing it would not. I leap from our bed to try to help my husband, to try to do something before they kill him. I go for the one closest to me not really sure of what I intend to do but know I have to do something. As I approach the man seems to sense that I'm there for he turns to meet me.
Before I have the chance to blink he's behind me and has my arms pinned painfully behind my back as he kicks the back of my knees to send me to the floor keeping my arm stretched up and out behind me. After he pins me all I can do is scream and then cry as I beg them to stop hurting him. After what seems like an eternity they finally do stop as suddenly they began and a fifth man enters our home. As he walks in with his eyes fixed on Xaviar he says "Tsk Tsk Xavair, did you think you could stay forgotten forever". He then looks around the house for a moment before his eyes settle on me as he says to Xavair "What a pretty savage you got there, maybe we should have a try, should we boys?" my blood runs cold as the other four men laugh and call out their agreement. The fifth man, the leader, seems to pause and think for a moment before saying "Naw, I've got something better. Now Xavair your pretty wife and you betraying sack of scum will come back to the fold, just cause your my boy and I see you got pulled on the wrong path, and in exchange we don't kill you and have your wife for some fun", the leader looks down at him waiting for an answer. As I looked from the leader to Xaviar and our eyes locked I'm sure he can see the fear and confusion warring in my eyes and I feel more tears fall as I see the damage they've done to him as he shakes his head yes, to which the leader says "Good little savage, now where's your gear and we'll do some talking".
The next morning after they had left and I was able to tend to Xaviar, we packed what we needed and left. For the first week Xaviar was quiet, withdrawn, almost the same as when I first met him. This makes me believe that these men are from the past that he never wanted to talk about. I do my best to be there for him both during the day and at night. I know he tries to mostly keep me out of what we have to do but I try to help as much as I can, to share this burden with him. I know that there's things that he's not telling me or maybe can't tell me but I know that I love him with everything that I am and I will do my best to comfort, protect, and support him in any way that I can and maybe, just maybe we will find a way out of this alive. Its been 4 years since that night and 3 and a half years since I found a direwolf pup, barely alive next to his dead mother. I didn't give him a name for the 6 months that he was with us, believing that once he was big enough and strong enough he would return to his pack. When it became apparent that we were now his pack I gave him his name, Mattaki.
