Cadet Review
Ryen is a charismatic individual, capable of connecting with each person on the crew. Though he preforms best in a science or medical setting, he shows apptitude for other setings as well, mainly for command. Ryen is a natural leader and though he lacks refinement in the area, he is capable of swaying a crowd. He has proven resilliant through injury and loss after an encounter on our ship with a cloaked mine left him scarred, hearing impaired, and in need of open chest surgery. The same incident killed one of Ryen's friends aboard the ship, yet Ryen was capable of recovery both physically and mentally and soon returned to duty. Ryen would make a fine addition to any crew. I, Captain Hiroyasu Kakinami, hearby clear Cadet Ryen for full service in Starfleet as a junior science officer and further recommend him for command training in addition to his scientific duties to set him on track for a command position aboard a science vessel.
Accident Report
I, Captain Hiroyasu Kakinami, am certify that an accident involving Cadet Austen Ryen occurred at 13:52, Stardate 2375.8214 as stated in this letter written by Nurse H'Rue Squimor. In the Bajor sector of the alpha quadrent, while on a scouting mission around Bajor, our ship, the U.S.S. Red Baron, ran into a cloaked mine. Hull damage was taken on decks 5-10. The most devistating of the damage being on decks 6 and 7. At the time of the accident, Cadet Austen Ryen was serving in operations on deck 5. The damage taken to the deck caused the deaths of several crew members, Cadet Ryen being one of the surviving few. When brought to medbay he was unconcious, had suffered severe burns to the right side of his body, been hit with serveral pieces of shrap metal (including one which was lodged in his heart and causing severe internal bleeding), and had spent roughly 1 minute without oxygen due to the impact of the explosion. He was immediately supplied with life support oxygen until readings appeared normal. During this time he was also rushed into emergency surgery to remove the shrap metal in his heart by Dr. Guenivine Hamuin. Our medbay being on deck 11 had taken some damage due to the explosion and had to rely on more invasive surgeries to operate on Cadet Ryen, due to equipment damage. Once both the internal bleeding and oxygen levels were stabilized Cadet Ryen transferred to the treatment of Nurse Squimor where he was monitored as further scrap metal was removed and his burns were treated. Further scans showed damage to inner ear structures. Further therapeutic treatment was done to treat the ear damage and hearing was able to be partially restored in the left ear; however, due to the severity of the burns, his right ear remains mostly deaf. He gained consciousness at 02:13 on Stardate 1375.8241 under medical supervision. Further therapeutic treatment was given in the form of physical therapy to regain control over right side of body and strengthen the heart. Mental health follow up with councilor Q'Tal Cum'til indicated strength and resilience during recovery. Cadet Ryen decided against cochlear implant surgery to restore full hearing and chose to instead rely on hearing-aids to bring back to restore the majority of his hearing.
Letter of Recommendation to Starfleet Academy
Dear Starfleet Academy Admissions Board,
I am writing to recommend Austen Ryen for admission to Starfleet Academy. I have encountered Mr. Ryen serveral times throughout my career in Starfleet and his childhood. I have always known Mr. Ryen to be curious and thoughtful individual, capable of obsorbing new knowledge like a sponge.
As an child, Mr. Ryen was capable of assisting in the out-of-discussion portion of negotiations alongside either of his parents. I have seen him, even as a young boy explain and honor the values of the Federation and of Starfleet to people of numerous backgrounds and cultures. He has also shown a natural curiosity for science, particularly in the area of space travel and anomolies.
I’ve always put a premium on compassion among my crew members and Mr. Ryen never failed to deliver. As a older teenager, I encountered Mr. Ryen during a diplomatic mission involving his mother and serveral other politicians from across worlds. I watched as Mr. Ryen carefully learned about and came to a genuine understanding for the other politicians and their cultures. I then bore witness as he described and advocated not for the needs of himself and his people, but for the needs of all cultures affected by the treaty to his mother, using his platform to boost the voices of others in a calm and collected manner.
Should you have any further questions about Mr. Ryen, feel free to reach out to me.
Thanks,
Schwini zh'Rasda
