Jakob Dumas was born the son of a merchant family in the northern part of Panda, the first of two siblings. While Jakob and his sister Anna's early years were filled with happiness, misfortune soon fell onto the lands of Celeste as the winters of the north became increasingly harsh, and crops continued to fail. Jakob's parents were forced to sell most of what they owned, and their father accrued an ever-increasing debt to keep their business going. It was one particularly harsh winter in which Anna became afflicted with consumption. Being unable to afford the rare medicine to help her, Jakob, then 19 years old, formed a local band of villagers to turn to banditry.
Hoping to create the medicine himself, he then apprentices himself to a local apothecary who had joined his band. Jakob attacked caravan after caravan, hoping desperately to find the medicine, while his father turned a blind eye to his activities. Years followed on his crafts, and finally finding medicine for his sister, he returns to the castle, only to be arrested by agents of the Pandarian crown for his crimes. His father claims ignorance of Jakob's actions, and he is summarily imprisoned and sold to compensate for the damages he has caused.
His immediate goal now involves the escapement of his current condition, and to find a way to return summer to his lands. With returned prosperity, he hopes to rebuild his father's business and save his sister from dying of consumption.
