Golden And Glorybound

The Kleitos family was always "great." For hundreds of years they were the "great family of Kleitos" in ballrooms and in courts of Adura. But then came Nikias Kleitos, fourth of his name and the worst of them all. In his greed, he married his four sisters into the different noble lines and disinherited the rest of the family, leaving his line the sole inheritor of the Kleitos fortune. But he was not to be the "great" Nikias Kleitos for long, as it was not but five years later that his entire fortune was lost - to gambling, to bandits, to debts, and the Kleitos family could no longer reside in their great house on the cliff.
 
They moved into a tiny cottage in the town of Clarathos, making money where they could. Nikias died long ago, bitter and ashamed in his pride. This is where Aeneas Kleitos was born, fifth of his name and second born son. He could not inherit (not that there was much to inherit in the first place) and so left to seek his fortune.
 
He crossed into Mercercle, where the Kleitos name had faded from memory quicker than a rabbit from a trap. There he found work as a cartographer's apprentice for a time under the tutelage of Valentin Bellamy, but soon grew bored with the tedium.
 
At this time a group of naval officers and their companies were passing through the small inland town, and Aeneas grew intrigued by their stories of the wide open sea. He had drawn the sea countless times, but had never seen it. He faked his papers and claimed to be a Ducercle, and joined on with Captain Mavis Durand: a dark-skinned woman with as much humor as there is ale in a tea house. The ship under her command was known as The Night's Gale, and Aeneas, though he had never seen the ocean before, let alone sailed, took to it like he took to anything: with tenacious resilience.
 
There were good times aboard the ship. Ale and songs and laughter. There were bad times as well, like when the cabin boy Maxim was thrown overboard during a storm and was never seen again. Yet still Aeneas grew tired of this as well.
 
On shore leaves while in the Port of Saphir Aeneas became infatuated with the contests that took place on the docks. The sailors and dockworkers, wrestling each other to the ground or crossing swords until one drew blood. He began to frequent these events, joining in when he was allowed. At first he was the worst of the lot and was a sure bet to lose, if you were into gambling. But like everything else, he was resilient, and began to improve dramatically, soon becoming the best fighter on the port.
 
But soon time came to leave the port again, yet the young sailor didn't want to leave. There was too much here he wanted to do and see. So when the Gale set off the next morning, Aeneas was not on board, and was instead wandering the city streets, looking for more competition. It was while in Opale that he came across holy warriors, crossing blades for the glory of the god of war. He had never seen such a display, for Terak is not worshiped so fervently in Adura and the small town he worked in as a mapmaker did not have a temple to the god either. He called to one of the swordsmen and asked him questions about the god, but was disappointed as he listened. For Terak did not believe in the strength of the individual but in the strength of the many.
 
Aeneas was about to walk away when he heard two of the Soldiers of Terak discussing the tale of Terak's son, Aerix. Aeneas was intrigued, and eavesdropped on their conversation. He was impressed with the tenacity and strength showed by the demigod, though he disagreed with the soldier's assertion that it is a cautionary tale of hubris. In Aeneas' mind, this was what he had been searching for: a man who knew his worth and would fight to ensure that all knew he was the best. Aeneas took his sailor's wages and bought a set of armor, a weapon, and set off to travel the land, intending to bring glory to himself and to his family once again.
