Craigiath, also known as Craig, was born into into the noble Dinalogosson family as a bastard. This meant that he had distant relationship with his father, a stubborn elven gentleman named Vaeryl Dinalogosson, and a non-existent one with both his father's wife Shaerra and biological mother, who he never met. To add to this harsh environment his two older half-brothers, Zeno and Alluin, tormented him often. The only relationship he truly valued during his upbringing was with a dark elf teacher named Coleth who his father had hired to tutor him in linguistics. Due to having noble blood Craig was granted with excellent education and show a talent for both linguistics and divination magic.
Craig lived almost all of his early life in the great elven treetop city of Felenlenora, deep within Si'hellan. Despite this, and the fact that he was skilled in divination, he had a terrible sense of direction and spacial awareness which led him into some problematic situations. This gave him the misplaced reputation of being stupid which encourage his peers and siblings to play practical jokes on him.
Things took a drastic turn for Craig in the 36th year of his life, when the Etherien Republic was founded in the neighboring state of Etherien, and began its conquest towards the north. As the dark elves rebelled against the decision for the Si'hellan forces to ally themselves with the Republic, Coleth was suspected of conspiring against the Council of Si'hellan. It didn’t take long for his half-brothers to notice this and Craig’s unyielding admiration for her so they began to spread rumours that she was spying for the north. Craig immediately try to defend her with by using what little political influence he had and begged his father to help him. Due to the political pressure this made everything worse as his father was worried about the public out-cry that Craig was now causing. In a last ditch effort to regain his reputation Vaeryl ordered the torture and execution of Coleth and forced Craig to witness this.
The agonizing effects of the magic left Craig mentally scarred and soon after observing it he ran away from his family to a nearby village called Nef Tirion. He became paranoid of the destructive effects of magic and desperately started to learn abjuration magic. During this he sent a letter to Coleth’s family; giving directions to her grave where they may be able to pay there respects. Little did he know that actually gave the completely wrong directions and instead revealed the location of valuable battle supplies for the Etherien Republic. Coleth’s family gave the letter to the Kingdom of Korvald and wrote back to Craig.
After realising what he had done, Craig felt inspired to do more. He quickly proceeded to tell everything that he knew regarding the southern war effort. He then joined the Dawn Legion, the military of the Republic, to gain more information which led him to the front lines where he fought in many battles. Since he care little to what happens to his comrades he would cast his abjuration magic upon himself which quickly made him unpopular and once again, encouraged his comrades to play practical jokes on him. He continued to send sensitive information regarding the war but due to his poor sense of direction sometimes he accidentally led northern troops into traps. To the southern military this made him look like a hero, to the north this made look like an idiot. As a result of this Craig was promoted to the role of a Swordcaptain which he gladly accepted, as he was able to send more information to the troops of Korvald.
After the north had lost the war, Craig became depressed and drank heavily, feeling that he had failed to get the revenge on the south that he sought. He became disorderly and started to lash out at his superiors and as a result of this he lost his rank, eventually being forced to work as a Vedette, a town guard for the Dawn Legion. He was reassigned to work in a northern town in the Folkmar mountains, in what was once the Kingdom of Korvald.
Two months have passed while Craig worked in that small town of Oar's Rest. He worked under the authority of Shieldcaptain Jana Essyn, a woman who is quite eager to prove herself. He is often made fun of by the other Vedette, and he feels quite out of place as the only southern elf who works in this faraway village. The only real things that have happened were a few sightings of lizardfolk in the area, which Shieldcaptain Jana took care of brutally with a few of her finer men. Craig was never invited for any exciting missions.
Now, in the 98th year of his life, Craig stands guard on a cold morning in the early winter. The night before, him and his colleagues drank and partied, and when he passed out (elves can't take the strong northern brews very well), they mocked him and messed with him. The following morning, because the first snow of the year had fallen that night, a family wanted to pick the last of their crops before they died - a Vedette needed to stand guard as the field is right outside the village. As a joke, his peers said Craig should do it, and Jana agreed. Hungover and tired, Craig leans heavily on his staff, as his breath makes puffs of smoke in front of him, and he watches two children play while their parents pick crops in the slushy mud-snow. Could it ever be worse than this, he wonders. Suddenly, he sees something happen that may change his life forever...
