Personal history
As a distant cousin of the infamous, and legendary, Bilbo Baggins, Wilcome had easy access to wondrous stories of adventure, heroism, and epic conflict with the Shadow. To his parents' chagrin, Wilcome drank in these fireside tales with gusto. Over time, he became discontent with the idyllic, peaceful life of both the Shire and his native Buckland. He felt as though he should be doing more than merely fishing, or tending the safe beds of his mother's garden.
Still, what could he do? He was only a small Hobbit, quite a little fellow in a wide world, after all. There was no way he could hope to take on the Shadow, as cousin Bilbo called it, alone.
Then came news of King Bard's proclamation. At last, Wilcome had his chance to really make a difference.
So, one night, he slipped out of the window to his room, and set off for Lake-town.
