After a childhood spent shuffling from one youth home to the next, Rae had learned how to adapt and change to suit their situation. In fact, it was at the age of 17 that Rae first experienced just how “adaptable” they truly were during a bank robbery (and yes they were -in fact- robbing the bank). Rae had managed to find their way into a small-time crime group, as a way of making rent. Anything beats a day job, right? Rae mostly tagged along on small operations, but this time she’d been invited to help with a heist… a BIG heist. This particular bank handled funds that flowed between the two worlds -the waking, and sleeping [if you wanna give this name a name and location, you can!]. Back to the heist… as you may have guessed it didn’t go that well… like, at all. Of the five runners sent to the bank, only Rae and Rodney (nicknamed “hotrod”) survived. And the only reason they survived is because of their… abilities. Rodney evaded death by transforming himself into a rat and escaping through the floor vents. As for Rae, they “became” a hostage. Shapeshifting was something they’d heard of, but not realized they could do. Not only could they do it, but they were really fucking good at it. Rae didn’t just not die in the heist, they made off with nearly fifty grand in their backpack. And that’s where this shit all really started.
You see, taking the lion's share of a failed heist that, according to your bosses, only you and the other rookie escaped and then disappearing is really just asking for a mark on your head. Luckily, Rae could blend in with almost any crowd, and Rodney spent most days post heist in some wild shape or another. They met up a while after shit went down to decide what to do with the money and landed on the only option that made any sense at all. Start a drug syndicate! Within six months if there was a drug in the City of Angels that you could name, they sold it. Not only that, they made most of their own product. Rodney is a talented grower (probably the druid in him) and their stock is top quality, and Rae would know... Helps to cut out the middleman too. Business from there is pretty simple, right? Dead. Wrong.
Let's talk about identity issues. It’s one thing to be trans, it’s another to be an orphan, and it’s a third to be dealing in drugs. Add all these up and you’ve got one hell of a ticking time bomb. That’s Rae! After discovering their shapeshifting, they hardly spent more than a day in any body. Trying to figure out who they were meant to be for their whole life, but hadn’t been able to shape themselves to. It took a while, but they finally landed on what they call their “default”. What feels right. That’s right, they’re a fucking twink with tits! Usually clad in black, with shortish messy hair dyed red/black. That being their “default” they can take any shape they wish -so long as it’s humanoid. As for clothing, Rae found their solution in a simple set of glamour armor. With a delicate light pairing of a vest and pants, they can shape along with Rae to suit whatever form they shift into. Even with their “default” and a good set of clothes for any occasion, Rae has always had trouble knowing what they want, which is why they deal in the business of what other people want, namely drugs. Along with not knowing what they want, they struggle with who they want.
Enter Lilah LaCroix or “Saturday” on stage, Rae’s ex. She and Rae met shortly after the bank incident. Way out of their league, Rae truly didn’t know what Lilah could have seen in them. Must have been something because they spent almost three years together. The relationship went well, almost perfect until Lilah found out how Rae had been making money… whether she left because she really couldn’t handle the situation, or to protect her family [you get to pick her parents… someone important] it didn’t matter at this point. She was gone. Sometimes Rae wonders if the real reason she spent any time with them was for their shape-shifting… and eventually that wasn’t enough and the drugs gave her a good excuse to leave. Rae has been “keeping up” on her progress in the music scene (online stalking her). In the meantime, Rae has lost most of their sense of self-worth. They’ve taken to “selling” products for sex with attractive customers. Which Rodney disapproves of, of course. “Good stocks not worth anyone’s cock” he says. Rae tells themself they don’t mind… and besides, when things go bad… there’s always magic to get Rae out. Though it scares the shit out of them to use it. It’s not like other people's magic. It’s raw and visceral. Rodney is a druid, so nature is his source. Other people have their gods or demons or whatever. Rae’s just… is. The first time it happened… some people died. Their childhood friend Jamie among them. Rae doesn’t remember exactly how it happened, just that they got mad and… then they woke up in a hospital.
Lately, Lilah has been playing a lot of shows in the art world, so Rae figured they’d get set up as the plug for an upcoming rave at a local gallery. Maybe they could “bump into” her? Or maybe something else will come along.
