A Calculated Wardrobe Malfunction

by Fen Hallowscar

Upon leaving Gaedren's hideout, we knew two things: first, the city was in disarray because the king had just died; second, we had in our possession a brooch belonging to the Queen herself. Oh, and we also had found a hat box containing the head of our patron, Zalara, with the harrow deck she asked us to recover!

Our reluctant band reconvenes after some rest at Zalara's house. To our astonishment, it no longer appears to be the well-loved, comfortable abode we last saw, but an empty, dusty, long-abandoned house. This disparity is explained when—shockingly—the ghost of Zalara appears to us and explains she was murdered by Gaedren. Our killing him provides her succor and revenge for the death of her son, and she bequeaths us her harrow deck, noting that if we have need of her, we can contact her through it. She also lends us her house (which I take advantage of since, ahem, Fen Hallowscar does not yet have a place to stay...).

The next day we gather (I guess we are a team now?) and take the brooch to a jeweler who confirms that it does belong to the Queen. He encourages us to take it to the castle to return it, and likely earn a reward! Thus, we begin carefully making our way through Korvosa, as there is still chaos and rioting in the aftermath of the King's death. To some, apparently supporters of the Queen, the King's death is a boon; to others, those opposed to the Queen, they are suspicious of his sudden death. I, for one, don't want to get mixed up in these politics...just a nice reward.

On the way to the castle, we encounter some imps reveling in the chaos. After dispatching them, we get to the castle and return the brooch. The Queen is pleased, both with our returning the item and our prowess in combat, so she implores us to go to Citadel Volshanek and become agents of the guard (conscripts us? At the very least we couldn't say "no"). As agents of the guard now, we receive our first orders: investigate a group of guards who are convinced the Queen wishes to bring harm to the citizens. On our way to the first location to begin our inquiry—The Wide World of Meat—we happen across a wildly drunk aristocrat who is keen to duel. I foolishly took him up on his offer. As we prepare to duel, my colleagues tell me that, even drunk to the gills, he still looks like a capable swordsman. I begin to fret...I mean, I'm OKAY with a sword, but not the best. As the duel begins, I realize I have one foolproof plan to throw him off his game... since I am wearing tear-away clothing, I, well, tear them off! I initially assumed this would just elicit a momentary lapse of reason in him enough I could get a quick jab in on his arm and end the duel.

I forgot, though, that I was not wearing any undergarments.

Thus, throwing my clothes aside rapidly, and bare-assed, I stood before him wielding only my sword. There was a tense pause. Then, he burst into tears and crumpled to the ground, muttering something about "why were women so difficult to understand?" or some such nonsense. Suffice it to say, the duel was over. We made our way on to The Wide World of Meat!

(Note to self: repair tear-away clothing.)
