Starting Expedition

by Zella Solaris

They are saying we will reach the metal giant within a day. It's quite unlikely I’ll find anything here, despite my slight similarity with Morrow's discovery, but the Sun has willed me here. I only hope Morrow doesn't share my story, I may have got excited and told him too much. I don't want to attract any attention, not yet at least, until I'm ready. Perhaps once we arrive it will be a nice reprieve from the dust and sand but the thought of not being able to see the sky while we explore this hazardous metal structure makes me anxious, just like the cave.

We were fortunate, the beginning of this expedition almost resulted in disaster. While we took shelter from a sandstorm in a dark underground cavern we encountered some monstrosity. I was close to fainting in the digestive juices of the creature's belly, an experience I pray I never have to repeat, and Levi, you might consider him luckier as I don't think he remembers much, but his mind was almost lost. Thank the divine he has recovered so quickly, it was a miracle, or perhaps the work of his demonic blood… Whatever it was, it is in our favor as he could have been a serious liability. As for whatever we fought it was horrid, it resembled something in my readings, beings known as “the Flood” that lived long ago. I collected some sort of tadpole-like specimen, its offspring? or maybe just a parasite? I should probably destroy it just in case it starts growing. Nevertheless, we are all still alive for the time being and have almost reached our destination.

My new companions did prove quite capable in combat. I find them likable so far. Hope has courage and a good heart, Blank seems clever but his technology is weird, and Levi… Well his demonic visage unsettles me, he is pessimistic, carries manacles, and has a negative attitude towards the gods, but I suppose he fights well enough. My last companion, Helaina, has a bounty on her head, and well, what she confided to me- Absolution is not something taught in my order and the crime she confessed is severe enough for scripture to warrant execution. Everything I've been taught in my studies seemed so black and white until recently and it's hard to not feel hurt at the discovery it was a friend and one of the few people I trusted who stands accused of such a terrible sin. Morally I cannot stand idle but without more information, I don't know how to act. Unfortunately, I also could not find the bounty hunter, even after an hour of searching camp. The thing that disturbs me most is Helanin’s reason. She said it was in exchange for power? Was she lying? Once this expedition finishes I think I would like to seek an audience with this “Patron” of hers. I will pray for guidance and shall have faith her judgment is made clear.
