Landfall on Alpha

General Summary

Huren (the 9th month) 16, 1610 - Arrival on Alpha

Arrival on Alpha
Felpip, Sigmund Vaylen, III and Unlander disembark the Kymorda . Sigmund intent on collecting samples finds himself unprepaired and having no shelter. He wanders about offering 3gp to anyone for a tent. Having a spare, a large man sells him one off his mule. The three PCs take a liking to the man and his family and they join up in a circle of tents with them - The Burley Family (Jargon Burley and Audrey and their three sons Jargon Jr, Jager, Jason).   Sigmund Vaylen, III is incapable of setting up his tent and the youngest Burly boy, Jason does it for him.   Kasimir Voronov had to remain on the transport helping to unload it. When he finally was able to leave, he spotted Sigmund and decided to join their circle of tents.   When Harlon Olead comes asking for each "Tent-circle" to nominate a captain to attend meetings, Jargon and Unlander (who was quietly reading in his tent) agree to the task.

Audrey Burley (a thin woman) begins to cook dinner for her family, others in the tent-circle contribute food and the tent-circle enjoys a hot meal and begins to make connections. It is learned that Jargon Burley is indeed a lumberjack and hopes to make a living here felling trees and opening a lumber yard. Felpip enjoys a cup of coffee.

The First Tent-captains meeting
Soon a bell rings and Jargon, Unlander (and Felpip) go to the Tent-captains meeting. There Lord Pike Bellweather greets the assembly and thanks them for their leadership. He asks for skilled volunteers to group up in the morning, venture out and report back on possible nearby town locations. He also reports that a merchant ship, The Quark, that was with the Kymorda is missing and they have reports that if went off course during some strong turbulence during entry. He was told by the captain of the transport that it likely ended up southwest of here. The ship carried a large cargo of dried goods (rice, beans, coffee beans, lentils, jerky) that the merchant intended to sell.

Unlander spoke that this did not bode well and according to his calculations, the colony would likely suffer a food shortage. Recognizing the same concern Lord Pike Bellweather invited Unlander up to the make-shift stage of crates to re-iterate the situation.   There were no immediate volunteers to go after the merchant ship and Lord Pike Bellweather asked them to pass the word back to their camps and for any willing to do this to attend the morning briefing.   On the way back to their tent circle (#33), Felpip suggested that Jargon would make an excellent person to find the ship. When the table was turned on Felpip, he quickly tried to change the subject!   Soon folks began to turn in for the evening.   Kasimir Voronov found the quiet unsettling. He decided to walkabout the camp. He saw the militia (poorly capable and poorly equipped) on patrol. He also found a tent-circle of one-way roustabouts from the Kymorda. The roustabouts are playing dice and enjoying strong drink. He approached and was welcomed in by Jagbar (a half orc) with whom he had worked with on the ship. He got some additional confirmation about the missing merchant ship and learned most of the roustabouts were going to hire themselves out as muscle - although Jagbar kept his plans nebulous.

Huren (the 9th month) 17, 1610 - the PCs set out for and find the missing Merchant ship

It is an overcast, crisp morning.   Felpip is up and early, Audrey Burley jokes that there maybe no coffee if the missing ships goods are not sought. Staring into the black of what might be his last cup of coffee Felpip seems to resign himself that he will go.   Sigmund, unprepared for the cold, uses his tent as a blanket... bleary eyed he wanders through the camp dragging tent pegs and strings behind him. He sits and munches on food next to the Burley children.   Soon the tent-captain bell rings and the morning meeting begins with opening blessings from Stephen Minard (a cleric of Pelor) and Kadisia Samarigan (Cleric of Celestian).
A morning meeting
Once again Lord Pike Bellweather asks if there are any volunteers to search for the merchant and again invites Unlander to re-iterate the risks. A number of the PCs had mentally settled on doing this, however before they can speak, Sigmund stands up in the middle of his toast and shouts that he will gladly lead the expedition!   Lord Pike Bellweather is pleased at the volunteers that come forward and asks them to group up and let him know what they need... it seems a wagon and two horses are in order and they will be sent to Tent-Circle #33 after the meeting.   General consensus indicates there were three aboard the ship: Quincy Delatain , his son Quarton Delatain and Pilot Janadine Travis.

The Lord reminds the assembly that representatives from the Tremon Alpha Settlement Board of Trustees of the Etolarian Empire will be arriving in two months and to make every hour count... Other things are happening, parties are venturing out to scout the area with the hopes of selecting a suitable site for a village. And assorted groups are venturing out to begin collecting resources.
PCs Depart the Tent-City
With the meeting over, the PCs assemble, collect the horses and wagon and venture out to the Southwest - in a direction Unlander believes to offer the best chance of success. The ground is well saturated and the wagon's wheels cut into the grassland and the horses hooves churn up the grass. Soon they encounter an old cobblestone road!   Investigations ensue - Felpip is convinced it is not gnome, dwarf or elven made - likely human. Sigmund collects a sample of the road (the part with worn wheel grooves in it). Unlander decides to follow the road for a bit. Mainly because the wet ground is not allowing the speed he'd hoped. The road is indeed faster but it is heading to the coast and soon deteriorates and ultimately disappears. Once again it is off-road, but south towards a treeline that is visible.   Moving through the loosely clustered trees they spot what looks like a crashed ship and some downed trees. As they pause to observe a winged, scaled, snouted, humanoid form rises above the trees above the wreck before disappearing back down into the foliage.
A crashed ship and Kobolds
The wagon and horses are tied to a tree and the PCs advance on the down ship. About 50 yards away they hear a "bark". It turns out four kobolds (one with wings) are at the crash site apparently looking for treasures. The PCs make an excellent effort to approach and parley with the creatures, catering to their love of treasure. Shiny coins from Kasimir, ensorcelled with brilliance from Felpip draw the kobold's undivided attention. After wetting the Kobolds appetite for treasure, they begin attempting to glean information from them. They seem to indicate there are captives. More bribing is attempted, but most of the Kobold clearly are wary at giving away a direction - except for one greedy one (Jark) who shocks his fellow kobolds by stepping forth, claiming coins and pointing west.   The kobolds devolve into anger at the "traitor" and begin to squabble and fight over the additional treasure. The winged one takes fight with his coins claiming he is going to "tell" on the traitor Kobold.   Combat ensues with Felpip taking out the flyer with Magic Missile. Another Kobold is dropped and two are knocked unconscious and captured (The other being Uark).   In summary the party has learned (thanks to Sigmund's familiarity with Draconic) that...
  • The kobolds have a leader
  • They have a sense of pride/fear of the leader
  • May have prisoners "Like the PCs"
  • Have a possible camp to the west of the wreck
A quick search of the ship reveals:
  • Small stuff has been carted off
  • 8 large barrels of dry-goods are intact (including one with coffee beans)
  • Blood in the cockpit indicates the pilot is likely injured - Janadine "Janna" Travis
