Brastir

Overview

Brastir is an island in Marine Territory, mainly populated by Dwarves. It has two important settlements, the small harbour town which gives access to inlands via the river, Corrachir, and the large mining city in the Dubhar Mountains, Corbach.

History

After Apocalypse II, Brastir had a small group of survivors; mainly dwarves. They lived as simple farmers and after the worst of the Dark Days was over, they went exploring and found the Dubhar Mountains. They came upon a large cavern when following the Gemst river, which had formed a lake in there. To advance their civilization, which had partly reset after the apocalypse, but still retained some mining and forging knowledge, they started a small settlement here. Over the years this grew into a larger town and since the support of the Dawn Empire, it has become a sprawling city smartly engineered on artificial islands on the lake.
Marine Involvement
Only fairly recent does this part of the seas belong to Marine Territory. In 900 AA the navy made it here, and saw the tremendous value of the mines of the dwarves. Their pact to join the Empire benefited the economy a lot. Since then it is also frequented by a lot of merchants from further away, who seek the rare minerals and high quality ore found in the Dubhar Mountains.
Goblin Slavery
The dwarves had not been the only survivors on the island. Their first days of rebuilding settlements and surviving were made a lot harder by the existence of several other creatures on the island. As everyone was hungry and miserable, the different groups raided each other. There were the great spiders, the goblins and bugbears and some other wild animals. At some point the dwarves started focusing more on building their settlements, but the goblins and bugbears kept raiding, as they did not have former knowledge of civilization. With the city of Corbach growing and the help of the marines, the dwarves of Brastir managed to subdue the goblins and bugbears that were still plaguing there towns. With the demand for ore growing rapidly, it was decided to use these prisoners for manual labor. Many generations of goblins and bugbears have since been slaving away in the mines.
