The village's main resource are the giant dragonfly populations that live around the waterfalls. Additional resources come from the portal that feeds the river and the waterfall. Many outlandish things flow from the planes into the Candle River. Unfortunately, sometimes live (and often dangerous) creatures too. It is Untuteb's duty to contain these creatures by either driving them away back into the portal, or killing them. This usually works well for the gripplis, who are used to a more warrior lifestyle than the rest of their congeners along the river. However, last time the portal open, it was just not one or two distracted creatures who crossed the portal, but a fully planned raid.
The village leader (their best warrior) died during the raid, and the power vacuum left since has left the village weakened. Most warriors are still recuperating from their own injuries, so the tournament they usually use to decide on their next leader hasn't happened yet. During this tournament, warriors usually display their skills in a wide variety of tasks, after which the whole village decides who is most apt to take care of the community next.
Except for the buildings affected during the water mephit raid, the houses are sturdy & hardy. They are built from tree saplings, waterproofed on the inside with clay. Each house has a little "perimeter" built out of pebbles collected from the lake at the bottom of the waterfall.
Recent Events
The town was recently raided by water mephits. Although they had survived relatively well in comparison to other grippli villages in the area, this raid caused them some heavy losses, which left them weakened to defend themselves from a new attack. What caused the attacks? The raid from mephits was unheard of.
Unfortunately, the inhabitants of Untuteb had too much in their hands to think about capturing one of them alive. So they never found who sent them.
The mephits attack happened exactly when the PCs were supposed to be arriving originally at the waterfall. And they were sent by the impostor professor at Pertkwugo.
Nice article! I like how the city is changing in response to this incursion. I think that most of my articles create things that are static. Not anymore!
Hehehe, my players got there, and all my plans for how things were changing changed. Of course, but I guess at least I had some idea of where things could go...
