The three families of Old Alterac

Across the history of Alterac, many powers have risen and fallen over the years since the those snow-blasted mountains came to be ruled by mankind. Beyond the infamous tale of the rise and fall of the house Perenolde, the stories of three lesser regional powers in particular have come to be viewed with some import in the scope of the current turmoils ravaging fair Azeroth.   It is said that in the dawn of Alterac - before the Light's spread as a dominant religion and the rise of the Stromic Empire - there existed many clans and families that vied for territory and power. Of these barbarians eventually rose a series of warlords - eached then-infamous for their cruelty and for their profane worship of the stars. Of course, with the Light's spread and the coming of civilisation these cruel despots were eventually brought low and the symbols of their power lost and forgotten, the scions of this nameless house are said to still walk Azeroth, yet following the dark path laid before them by their ancestors.   During this era of coming civilisation, the House of Saltzwald was (according to their own sources, at least) among the great founding powers of the Kingdom of Alterac. Rich in history and prestige, they claim to have once knocked elbows with royalty to the extent that some have even made a claim to royal blood, now long diluted. Proud to a fault, they grew fat and bold, resting on their laurels and dreaming that the good times would never end for their family. Of course, history is rarely kind - a series of blunders and a run of bad luck chipped away at their power bit by bit until the Saltzwald family was all but bankrupt and had lost much of its material power, throwing them into a deep decline. Around this time, an off-shoot of the family cut their losses and fled for the now-ascendant Kingdom of Stormwind, settling down in Sunnyglade as minor nobility and attempting to rebuild their clan away as best as they can - until the coming of the Orcish Horde shook all Azeroth and left the town of Sunnyglade as one of its first victims.   Those who remained in Alterac made one final gambit to reclaim their position in society as the debtors closed in and as the invitations to high society functions grew rarer, throwing their lot in with King Perenolde and betraying the Alliance. Hoping that the coming of the orcs would shift the balance of power, they were found lacking - their house broken at long last with this final mistake as Alterac was sacked by the Alliance's loyalists and many of their family slain.   Those who survived quickly arranged an alliance with a merchant house known as House Perroy - a family that had grown rich from a small monopoly over the iron and salt mines of Alterac and had eventually come into the trappings of nobility through the influence of coin alone. Considered nouveau riche by the remaining powers in Alterac, the creation of a merged branch of these two houses - the Saltzwald-Perroys - was seen as an opportunity to combine the old prestige and history of the crumbling Saltzwald clan with the wealth and territories of the Perroys. While the Saltzwald-Perroys became somewhat numerous, their plans were thwarted by the coming of the Scourge and the fall of Lordaeron. The vast majority were slain and risen into undeath.
