Flowologist

Flowologists are mage scientists who study the history and current state of the The Infinite Chain and other aspects of the flow. The Flow is the current of magic, life, and energy throughout the multiverse. Due to the dangers of their research, flowologists face many restrictions. Flowologists almost always work in complete isolation or in groups in remote locations in order to protect their secrets and prevent harm to civilian populations.   In modern Faerie, all legal flowology is closely overseen by the Order of the Sky. This practice was facing rising criticism until the Jekals attempt to open the flow (see Skyler Jekal ) put both Si'via and the Earth in great danger. This led to a massive crackdown on unlicensed flowology and several new restrictions on legal flowologists.    Additionally, as the understanding of the Infinite Chain and the history of the Corruption are becoming better understood, moral debates about Flowology and the Chain are going from obscure philosophical topics to major issues.    Those in favour of re-opening the flow, or at least experimenting with flow connections argue that the current state of the Chain is unnatural and restoring it to its nature state is the moral thing to do. There is also some evidence that being deprived of their natural magic has damaged the worlds beneath Si'via. Dim World, for example, has experienced a dramatic untick in seismic activity since magic was cut off at Si'via.   The more middle ground arguments talk of opening smaller flow connections to worlds above Siv'ia, which would allow for trade, diplomatic, and research opportunities with these worlds. This is still considered risky, since the only thing known about these other worlds comes from myths based on the societies that lived there in pre-corruption times. Many of the worlds directly above Si'via were also caught in the magical backlash and may have faced similar destruction and mutation. This, plus the long time that has passed means that any flow connections that are reopened could have very unpredictable outcomes.   Meanwhile, those who argue against the reopening of the flow cite the destruction of both the Corruption and the initial closing of the flow as evidence that well enough should be left alone. They point out that since all worlds involved have evolved to their new magic level or lack thereof, re-opening the flow would have the same results as the original closing only on opposite worlds. The worlds that have been without magic would suddenly find themselves blasted with it, which could lead to destruction, mutation, or on a smaller scale anarchy as everyone suddenly has magic powers. At the same time, worlds like Si'via would suddenly have much less magic than before, meaning magic based infrastructure might fail, magically dependent creatures might face extinction, and the stability of governments could be tested. Especially this soon after an attempted coup and in the midst of much geopolitical reshuffling and cries for autonomy, this could easily spill over into civil wars.

Operations

Workplace

The sanctioned flowology labs are all located in remote locations, often mountain ranges, deserts, and islands. A large lab complex in the The Blood Laced-Land has been suggested many times, but concerns over supernatural events there has held it back. It was recently publicly shot down by Viveno Heaven, which has legitimised the Blood Laced land myth for many and also likely put a stop to that plan.    Flowologists typically spend half to three-quarters of the year at the labs, and are carefully screened for documents or implements before they are allowed to return home.    New programs are being put in place to train specialized Flowologists who may one day travel along the flow to other worlds for research. These programs are in their starting phase and have faced a good bit of pushback, but one day it may be possible for Flowologists to work amidst the flow itself.
