The Blood Laced-Land
The blood laced land is a narrow band of unusually coloured deserts on the island of Shyuk in South Faerie. The desert has recently become a major mining centre and it is the largest exporter of gold in the Faerie Empire. It gained national fame for its unique blood red sand.
The story of that sand is far more sinister. Local legend tells of a time long ago, when the people of the island went to war with each other. The God of Peace, father of both peoples, pleaded with them to stop this conflict. They didn't listen, however. Over the centuries, their deity's pleas got more desperate. Eventually, the god gave up on his creations and decided peace must reign regardless of the cost. He then transformed into the god of death and slaughtered everyone on the battlefield.
This story is used largely as a cautionary tale against aggression: don't wage war or the death god will come for you all. It is also considered taboo in the region to enter the Land, or to touch sand from it.
While outside companies have begun mining in the region, the local people have taken issue with it. Many worry that the materials mined there will be cursed. Due to the superstitions in the area, no archeological crews have investigated the area. Additionally, none of the miners have reported the large number of humanoid remains expected to be found at the site of such a great massacre.
As of right now, it appears the sand colouration is simply a natural oddity, good for selling to tourists and little else. The story itself is regarded as partially or all made up, to explain the culture's peace centric views and the unusual sand colour.
The myth does bear some resemblance to the myth of the river of roses in South Central Faerie. That myth also tells of a deity pushed past their breaking point and killing large numbers of people, leading to a local landmark turning red. However, the river of roses only runs red on occasion, and at least two of those have been directly matched to times Vanessa's followers were particularly active.
One thing does give pause to the total exclusion of this myth. Recently, a group of rebels fighting against the Empire arose on Shyuk. The rebels ended up fleeing into the desert, pursued by imperial guards. Their bodies were found a few days later by a patrol. It appeared that every fighter on both sides had their skin removed, and every drop of blood squeezed from their bodies.
Art is by me.
I love the cover art! The way the glowing eyes leer over the footprints that lead further into the desert! Chills! I And it encompasses the entire feel of the article and the weariness the inhabitants of South Faerie feel when the miners dig for their treasures. Overall, fantastic article!
Thanks! I'm pretty sure this qualifies more as a 'supernatural horror' than a 'natural wonder', but hey, no one can *prove* the god of peace is murdering people
Same with my natural wonder. I'm worried that mine won't count, but since nobody knows "how" the place formed, I guess it can squeeze through. As long as it fits your world, it works.
