Jökulsfell (Yo-Kuls-fell)
Located on the fjord djúptangr (zjupe-tang-er) is the capital city of Viddleland. Jökulsfell, named after the large glacier that carved out the fell the city rests on, is one of if not the largest city in Viddleland. It is located on a flat plateau or fell above the fjord. The deep fjord acts as a natural harbor allowing trade to flourish in the city. That and it acts as an effective base fro vikingers to launch their raids from.
The city is located on the top of a fell protected from the back by a large glacier and to the front by the walls of the fjord. A series of paths and natural caves caves acts as the main way to enter the city from the sea. The only points needing real defenses are either sides to the north and south. Walls extend from the glacier to the cliffs of the fjord. Three layers of walls encroaching on the glacier signify the divisions in the city.
The areas by the cliffs and in the foremost layer is the merchant district also called the Fjord Quarter where many transactions are made on a daily basis. In the center is the Fell Quarter where most of the cities inhabitants live and where most make their homes and businesses. To the sides of the Fell Quarter is the Outlands Quarter where the cities slums reside, this area is an unofficial section outside the city walls. Behind the Fell Quarter to the east is the Glacier Quarter where the nobility lives and where the more well to do inhabitants make their homes and businesses. The jewel of the city is the Jökulhöll (Yo-cool-holl) where the High Jarl and their court resides. It is a grand castle carved into the ice and hardened using magic to preseve it and stop it from melting.
The primary trade of Jökulsfell is trade. The city is a hub for merchants and tradesmen from all over with the natural resources of Viddleland being traded for the goods from elsewhere. The wolf headed prow on Viddlelander longships is a common sight in traidports and lightly protected coastal towns the continent over. The standard policy for Viddlelander merchants is to stock up on supplies and trade goods, hire some mercenaries, and then go out looting and trading up and down the coasts of a country moving faster than the news can carry of their deeds. This leads to mixed reaction when they show up to trade, when rading the reaction tends to be a lot more viceral.
Jökulsfell is a grand city in a fractured nation. What happens to this old and awesome city is only up to the whims of fate.
