Sætar Rúllur
The once great kingdom that stood where Viddleland rules now collapsed over six centuries ago. It once spanned from its heartlands in the center of Viddleland across Galtarland to the borders of Hammerdeep and as far south as the norther tip of Marsir Eyjariki.
They were a great military might and had legions of mages and spell-casters aiding in their conquests. Their capital city of Öxithorpe, now known as The Fang, was a grand city built on the side of a mountain. It was dotted by forges and great buildings of crafting and learning. The magical school of Töfraskóli was built into the lower peak of the mountain and hosted many great wizards and skalds.
The secret behind the kingdom's success was because of the vast deposits of the Blood of Ymir found beneath the mountain. It was said that the capital was built over the First Giant's very heart. The mages of Sætar Rúllur used the Water of Magic to make many permanent portals between their cities allowing near instant travel and commerce between them. This allowed the kingdom to have a stable base to build their empire.
They expanded slowly at first before gobbling up the lands around them at haste. The kingdom managed to endure for over a four hundred years two hundred of which at full size controlling most of the north of Útgarðar. Then, as usually happens in these stories, disaster struck.
An archmage named Æirik of Three Faces proposed creating a Great Portal to connect the two great cities of Sætar Rúllur. Öxithorpe in the west and Svanthorpe in the east. Gallons upon gallons of Blood were poured into two great wells and dozens of wizards were brought to cast the spell. All seemed well as the portal opened connecting the two cities, the two ceremonial axes were thrown through from either side as was tradition for opening and testing new portals. And that's when the end of Sætar Rúllur began.
The two axes emerged from the portal changed, the one from Svanthorpe was smoking and warped and the one from Öxithorpe was translucent. The initial reaction of the crowd was of confusion before all hell broke lose, literally. The portal on the side of Svanthorpe inverted into the ground razing the earth and churning the land creating Mt. Drekafjall in northern Galtarland. At the same time the Öxithorpe side the portal released a blast of magical feedback killing everyone who could cast magic in a five mile radius. Then all of the portals within the region close to the Great Portal broke down and began to link to other random locations on the lower planes. Demons, devils, and other beings of the outer planes and beyond spewed forth laying waste to the entire heartland of the empire.
Those farther settlements who's linking portal in the heartlands had forcefully become a gateway suddenly became isolated from each other. In an effort to prevent the plane from becoming a war-zone in the Blood War Meili, the god of travel, used his power to link as many portals -leading to the same plane- together removing most of them and creating a number of new portals between locations in those planes. The Great Portal now acts as a gate to the Astral Plane allowing in anything that has made its way to that place that is naught.

Trivia
- The capital city of Öxithorpe used to hold great menageries with beasts and monsters from close and faraway lands put on display. When the Great Portal opened the wards were broken and the creatures rampaged. This is the reason why Villt Svæði has so many different monsters and threats in it.
- No one knows what became of Emperor Kolskegg Red-Scroll when the portal opened but contemporary accounts suggest that he was in the Great Portal room when it opened.
- The Chancellor Svæin Wise-Counsel who was away at the time on business remarked upon hearing of the disaster of the Great Portal "Well I did always want to retire to the coast and become a fisherman. Guess I don't need to retire now."
