Nezca was the title given to the prisoners that are put to bloody work in the Red Gardens,fullfiling particular roles within the performances of the Quexochilatli.
Their roles are not chosen by them, of course, but they can be surprisingly varied. Most often, they're intended to lose against the Quexochilatli. But there are more than a few stories and rituals come with the intention that the Nezca will win, or at least be at a significant advantage. Whether they are intended to win, hold their ground, or die in droves, they are armed properly to defend themselves and in a myriad of ways. After all, the performance would have no meaning at all within Xupantla culture if there was no weight to the victory or the loss.
Nezca translates to 'spirit' or, more literally, a 'ghost of the past'.
