Vasourey
We like to think that because our king is the Imperial Regent that our spot in the sun is guaranteed. It's an easy to trap to stumble into, I admit, but it is not so. Others, even the other nations of the Empire, would take it from us the moment they had the opportunity. Even just taking the Imperial Crown wouldn't be the end, either. It's my job to keep those claws out of our business. I have plenty of little sparrows keeping an eye on our neighbors.
-Santa For'albrisis, Secretary of State
Vasourey is a nation that can trace its formation back to the final moments of the The Dracanomachi, at least its earliest shapes. As the Battle of Broken Laurels came to its conclusion, ringing the death knell for the Old Empire and sending its many combatants scattering to the corners of the known world, a holdout in an old fortress started to gather survivors together, building a substantial population through the throngs that were looking for safety amongst a rapidly collapsing world. Cities were in chaos, and much of the world's infrastructure destroyed during the conflict. A mythologized historical figure now known as the Castellan, who is considered to be an individual of exceeding intelligence and foresight as well as with many tales of their magical abilities, and is said to have directed the forces of that holdout with aplomb and grace in a graceless time, and built what started as a simple fortress into an ever-growing and stabilizing force in the region. As the crowd in and around the fortress grew, so did their needs. Fields would have to be established to cultivate food as imports could no longer be relied upon. Wells dug, or aqueducts constructed/repaired. All these and more would need to be done, and what's more, protected against the decay of surrounding society. The Castellan, as legend has it, made sure all of this was possible. They organized their soldiers, and eventually the refugees, into effective forces for building and defense. Over time, buildings came up about the fort, forever growing in all directions and eventually forming into the city of Salallón. The Old Bailey, the name given to that fort of legend, is said to still exist beneath the Royal Palace in Salallón. However, This could prove to be a popular rumor or an open secret kept by the Royal Family for unknown reasons. Eventually, as the world mellowed and the last pieces of humanity realized how close they had come to being wiped out, as well as the Wyrms deciding to take a back seat to human action, the need for direct action diminished as well. The old fort and its forces remained active, but contemporary reports of the Castellan disappear nearly concurrently with the first formations of a truly autonomous government. Eventually, the most influential leaders would become the rulers of Vasourey, and eventually, its Royal Family, whose line continues unbroken until this day. Currently, the nation is most famous for its current ruler, who holds the title of Imperial Regent quite firmly after a decisive victory in the Huntsman Rebellion. By all accounts, the current Regent has conducted himself well in the position, while leaving his home nation largely in the capable hands of his wife. While there are always those that seek to take the title from him, he has largely succeeded in uniting the Imperial Diet, as well as extending overtures of peace to the Tsarinate of the Brumel, their historic rival on the continent.
