Chapter 07: January the 20th

General Summary

An excerpt from a very detail dossier:

…and with that said, my Lady, it is my professional opinion that these adventurers may yet serve your purpose.
In the dead of night, the dwarf and dusk-elf took to the Baron’s mansion and seemed suspicious of the attic, which we could play to our favor. I would suggest piquing their curiosity further when attempting to enlist their services, though perhaps their penchant for chaos may be enough of a motivation alone should we simply point them at the tyrant. Ma’am, early the next morning the Guardians ventured out to the lake and almost clairvoyantly engaged with a fisherman out at the water’s center. The Guardians discovered the man had intended on drowning the young Vistana, Luvash’s missing girl, and proceeded to immolate the man quite horrifically. Though I sustain my recommendation for their usefulness, I would still caution my Lady from employing the group beyond any immediate need - they seem a touch volatile for a long term or integral position within your future administration.
As if the Baron himself supported our coup, the tyrant then made a series of missteps that we cannot afford to let go unpunished. From what I can gather, sanctified bones from the catacombs beneath the church had been stolen by the coffin-maker at the behest of a number of vampirelings. With the church now deconsecrated, a dreadwolf snuck past the town wall and attacked a late morning service. Rather than admit that indeed all is not well with Vallaki under his leadership, the Baron had his men blame the Guardians and planned to have them executed after the Festival Brunch in a show of power. The brute’s hubris continues to be his and Vallaki’s undoing as with the assistance of the bardic band that escapes to the stockyards every night, the Guardians were able to leave the jailhouse and then track down the stolen bones of Saint Andral and quite heroically destroy the nest of vampires plotting to destroy Vallaki. With their innocence proven to the town, the Baron had no choice but to invite the adventurers to meet. Izek himself, the grotesque henchman, extended the invitation to the party at the Blue Water Inn, though strangely enough I did not see him leave with them.
With your permission, my Lady, I believe that it is time you made an impression on these Guardians yourself and introduced them to the future Burgomaster. There remain only a few holdouts among the wealthy of Vallaki and those that won’t be turned by the promises of your cult would surely find the word of such a powerful group enough to oust the Baron and begin out town’s journey toward true salvation.
