Dreaming Street

In truth, it’s a neighborhood, not a single street, but the name has stuck. Ramshackle buildings pack the neighborhood in all directions (including vertically), lining dirty roads that teem at night with pimps and prostitutes, purchasers and procurers, posturers and promulgators—and also of predators and prey. Some venues display their wares for all to see: Whores lean lasciviously from balconies, luring passersby, while doormen bark and bray, extolling the improbable virtues of gambling halls and floor shows. Other operations are more circumspect and less friendly to strangers, requiring the right knock on the right locked door to allow access.   No criminal organization dominates Dreaming Street. Ever since the Back Alley War, most of the folks and businesses here have been independent operators. Over the years, the proprietors of Dreaming Street have become quite proud of their independence, pulling together only for one thing: to keep any one outside organization from taking over the street. This is not to say that the Sloggers, The Pack, or Vetanni Consortium, or any of the other criminal outfits of the cities) don’t have interests and followers on Dreaming Street, but just that none of them can truly claim control of the place. This situation makes Dreaming Street a great place for aspiring newcomers to enter the world of professional vice. It also makes this region the site for constant low-level hostility between the warring criminal powers of the Two Cities.
